Album Notes
"With his clever, chromatic guitar hooks and lovely, yearning tenor, Zach Madden rises to the top of an already creamy, talent laden genre. This is post-labor day, end-of-the-summer melancholia: the August romance over, the ferris wheel shut down, the days still long and sunny but now imbued with a poignant, instant nostalgia. Fans of wistful, well-crafted rock in the mode of Wilco or Beck's latest releases will not be disappointed."

Andrew Hultkrans, author of Forever Changes (Continuum, 2003) and former Editor in Chief of Artforum's Bookforum

"The vocals are wonderfully textured...the lyrics are vivid and honest...well arranged and performed. This is a gorgeous song."

Cole Closser,, Springfield, MO (in reference to track 1)

The eponymous solo debut record of ZACH MADDEN. This is
vocally driven rock--stashed on a full-length album on which the musician sings, songwrites and plays guitar and drums--has garnered comparison to Creeper Lagoon, Death Cab for Cutie, Radiohead and Pink Floyd. Track one pulls you in and doesn't let you go...

The album was produced by Bruce Winter (who toured with and recorded Toad the Wet Sprocket). Winter's recent soundtrack work with Reinhold Heil (RunLola Run, The Princess and the Warrior, The Italian Job) allowed Madden and Winter to work on portions of the album at Heil's acclaimed Power Blue Music Studio in Santa Barbara, CA. Heil should be given credit for many of the textures and sonic landscapes created on Zach Madden.

Previously, Madden headed (as lead singer, co-songwriter and drummer) the long-lived band Mark Twain whose song "Waiting for the Change" spent an extended amount of time at number one (of more than five thousand songs) on's alternative chart in the spring and early summer of 2003. "Scribbledown," the first single on Madden's solo record is rapidly climbing that same chart.

Madden and his band Half Hour Drive are currently touring songs off the new album (as well as newer and older compositions). The group is comprised of Austin Beede (drums), Aaron Campos (bass, backup vocals) and Bear Erickson (lead guitar, backup vocals)--Madden sings lead vocals and plays guitar. All four members are longtime Santa Barbara residents.
