Album Notes
Persephone, the new double-album from Australian visionary songstress Wendy Rule is the culmination of over twelve years work, and although drawing on Wendy’s musical journey over the past 2 decades, is unlike anything that she has done before. This beautifully evocative retelling of the Ancient Greek myth of the Goddess Persephone’s descent into the Underworld and the subsequent grief of her mother, the Goddess Demeter, is a focused song cycle - almost like an opera - designed to guide the listener through this ancient tale of the cycles of Nature. With subtle textures that reference her early life as a jazz singer in her home town of Melbourne, and the trademark dark, gothic soundscapes and soaring vocals of her previous 7 major albums, Persephone is a unique 24 track journey through the realms of Life, Death, and human emotion.

Wendy has teamed up with both Australian and international musicians to create songs that range from intimate acoustic ballads, to dark brooding Underworld soundscapes and dramatic multi-layered vocal laments. Renowned Melbourne percussionist Elissa Goodrich, who has been part of Persephone’s development since the start of the project, plays vibraphone, marimba and percussion. Adding to Wendy’s acoustic and electric guitar is UK based cellist Rachel Samuel, and Wendy’s husband Timothy Van Diest, who provides the dark, brooding Underworld soundscapes. Five female vocalists from across the globe form a ‘Greek Chorus’, acting as priestesses to the three Goddesses, and helping to move the narrative forward: Melody Moon and Talie Helene from Melbourne, Callie Lampaditi from Athens, Cyokha Grace from Portugal, and Mauro Woody from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The incomparable Australian crooner Mikelangelo provides the vocals for Hades.

Wendy sings in the voices of the 3 Goddesses that feature in the myth: the maiden Persephone who becomes Queen of the Underworld, her grieving mother Demeter, and the wise Goddess Hekate. A true labour of love, Wendy has spent the past five years travelling regularly to Greece to research and deepen her connection to the myth by visiting the ancient sacred sites associated with its worship. Since her first visit in 2014 she has also been learning the language in order to sing some of the tracks in Modern Greek, creating a bridge between the ancient and modern worlds.

The album was recorded at both Toyland Recording Studio in Melbourne, and at Disclaimer Studios - Wendy and Timothy’s home studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Callie Lampaditi’s vocals were recorded in Athens, and Mikelangelo’s vocals in Canberra. Adam Calaitzis at Toyland mixed the album, and it was mastered by Joe Carras at Crystal Mastering in Melbourne.
Persephone was launched on February 23rd at Melbourne’s Thornbury theatre with a full band, bringing together musicians from Australia, the USA, the UK and Greece.

The album, including its 12 years of research and development, has been entirely self-funded. Wendy’s recent successful Pozible crowdfunding campaign raised the money for the manufacture of the beautiful double CD and Vinyl packages, featuring original art by renowned Santa Fe based artist Vicki Teague Cooper and photos by famous New Mexico photographer Karen Kuehn
