Album Notes
Very few of us are exposed to traditional hymnody today. Especially our youngest in the community. But Unfolding’s new album, Not Your Mama’s Hymns, bridges the gap - allowing us to glimpse at the holy yet satiated with the genres that feed our hearts in mainstream culture today. This gift provides “un-churched” folks a road map without expectations of assumed spiritual vocabulary and encourages those “experienced” in church realms to vision a different and fresh approach to music ministry. The listener will easily find open hearted songs rooted in deep advocacy for the oppressed. These hymns will inspire you to wonder, deepen your spiritual awareness, and of course have you singing along and cranking up the volume in your car!

Unfolding is the musical powerhouse duo of Sarah Jebian and Laura Weiss. The group’s signature sound is a blend of exciting harmonies and innovative arrangements. Pairing expertly crafted musical skills and collaborative partnerships with artists of almost every genre, Unfolding’s inventive vocals and arrangements awaken imagination and simultaneously soothe the weary soul.

"There is something in Sarah’s voice and Laura’s rhythm that creates a welcome co-mingling of heart and spirit. The more you listen, the more it becomes apparent that the presence of a gentle and wondrous universe emanates from their bones. They share an ineffable empath-speak that is conveyed in each hymn without restraint."
- Carol Campbell, Author, Host of Music Alley Radio

"What Sarah and Laura have brought is a true gift of music and ministry. Through beautiful vocals and instrumentals - this collection of hymns and songs is a must have for individuals wanting to bring some of 'church' home, music directors looking for a fresh approach to familiar hymns, congregations who may not have music directors or song leaders, and members of the Unitarian Universalist world who want to bring some of our values to friends and loved ones."
- Mimi Bornstein, Composer

"First of all, as a human being, a therapist and a person who loves good music—all these hymns touched my heart and soul. As someone who cares about alleviating human suffering and have built my life around doing so, this music resonates with the core of where I believe the pain is. I often use the phrase, “we love in the same place we are wounded.” This music brings love and joy and serves as a balm to that place of pain in the heart."
- Marilyn Williams, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW

"It's a real treat to hear some of our well-known hymns brought to life by the wonderful musicianship of Sarah Jebian & Laura Weiss. Hearing their performances would be most welcome in the classroom, driving in the car, or anywhere, anytime!"
- Clif Hardin, composer
