ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Tullochgorum is a Boston-based Scottish country dance band formed by Barbara McOwen in 1980. Since that time the group has played for many events around New England and across the country. Its members are also active as Scottish dancers, teachers and class musicians. "Tullochgorum" is an old and grand strathspey which has inspired several poems. The tune probably originated in the northeast of Scotland, the home of the strathspey style of fiddle playing. The name itself derives from the Gaelic tulach gorm, meaning “blue hill.” Recent years have seen the re-emergence of the fiddle as an exponent of Scottish country dance music. We find that the snaps in reels, jigs and strathspeys have a particularly light and strong effect when executed with the bow—not surprising considering that most of the tunes in our repertoire were written by fiddlers. The rhythm section of piano, bass and drums provides a firm and sometimes lyrical backdrop to the color and grace of the violins. — Susan Worland, December 1985, Somerville, Massachusetts
