Album Notes
I have been influenced by a lot of new orleans musicians. The songs are all original. The songs have unique changes and require musicians who know how to play a variety of styles including blues, jazz, reggae, and surf. The songs do have lyrics that have meaning, but are not self important. All of the tracks feature live musicians and are in large part recorded with the rhythm section playing together. There is a little overdubbing, but only to embellish the vibe. I have been greatly influenced by NRBQ, Elvis Costello, Albert Collins and a lot of players who play from the heart and sweat. The album features several instrumentals featuring guitar, harmonica, and sax. This album will not remind you of any one album or band you have heard. I think it will make you remember a lot of things when you hear it and discover new things as well.

Quirky, Humorous and Eclectic - this is everything Tom
To be fair, you couldn't say Tommy Shaper has the most tuneful voice in the world or is the best songwriter you'll ever hear, but his self-deprecating humor, eclectic mix of blues, jazz and ... (is that a touch of Ska?) make "Yoga Dogs and Music" irresistible. From his heartfelt tribute to sadly-missed good friend Seth to the middle-aged literal truism of "I can't find my keys", to my distant viewpoint from the other side of the globe it seems that Yoga Dogs and Music sum up everything Tom is and has worked towards over the last few years. Listening to the title track I can't help but be reminded of the songwriting style, humor and the dry vocal of Ian Dury's "What a Waste".
Thanks Tom, for living the dream on behalf of all middle-aged aspiring musicians, and for making me smile. :)
Keep on doing what you do. And I hope sometime we'll meet on your sell-out European Tour ;)

I love your style
Kinda bluesy, kinda jazzy. Very accessible and easy to listen to. The lyrics really resonated with me. Nice!

Where there's a wait, I better not complete that Cliche
When I first heard Tommy Shaper play he was already studying intently and developing a unique and inventive playing style way beyond his mere 14 years on the planet. Now, keep in mind that was coming from a compadre of the same young age those many years ago; but, after listening to Yoga, Dogs' and Music, I'm convinced that I should've become a music producer of "yet unknown" talent instead of a banker. Very nicely done, Tommy! (And yes 'paul@guitarmanuk', it isn't the Tommy singing voice that would've made my career...)
