Album Notes
Blues wail, tone poems, mama-moans and ehhthing in between, nahmeen? The Low Arkansas/Bedstuy/Northcakalak attack on Tim'm T. West's first solo effort includes production by ENS, Ashley Allen, and Manny Black. In 2002, the EP "Bayou Sessions" had began to create a buzz nationally and internationally due to Tim'm's work as an emcee with Deep Dickollective, whose most recent "Famous Outlaw League of Proto Negroes" has won multiple indie awards. The debut album "Songs from Red Dirt" is a journey in sound and soul. While D/DC are the underground conscious homiesexual mavericks of a movement being affectionately referenced as Homohop, Tim'm's solo work is an attempt to move from the political to the personal: to talk about life, love, origins, the streets, the clubs, the rites of passage growing up a black man in America.

Tim'm is an artist who melodically combines the elements of rap, spoken word, and jazz vocals with everything from Hip Hop to House music. An artist who chooses not to choose between genres, he is a unique member of a generation working to reclaim house music as music that originated in black gay subcultures and who simultaneously acknowledges the influence of Hip Hop culture. Says Tim'm, "My b-boyism was informed by both hip hop and house music cultures, and unfortunately, at various points in my journey, I have felt the need to choose one over the other...which suffocated my creative process altogether. I'm happy to be finally making music that I love and that people are responding to with enthusiasm. "Songs from Red Dirt" is about soul music ultimately, and soul spans many musical genres."

"Songs from Red Dirt" is the musical complement to Tim'm's first book, "Red Dirt Revival: a poetic memoir in 6 Breaths" (released in February of 2002). Nationally recognized for his poetry, he has read alongside G. Winston James, Marvin K. White, Jessica Care Moore, Ursula Rucker, and Jewel Gomez. An eclectic, Renaissance man, he is known as a poet, educator, activist, emcee, journalist, scholar, vocalist, among other things. He is a seasoned performer who has captivated audiences for years; now he has the product to compliment and support his various artistic projects.

"Songs from Red Dirt" features collaborations with vocalist Matthew, Cava Menzies, Chase One, and Manny Black and a cast of others. An eclectic sole experience, Tim'm challenges the boundaries of hip hop by engaging trip-hop, deep house, and classic soul with his sharp and witty lyricism, baritone wailin, and Spoken Word. Check the breath on "Change" (Seasons Remix), "Playboys", "Elemental", and the title track "Red Dirt."

Put it in and let it play
I fell in love with this CD while traveling to a PRIDE event. My attention was on the road, but my ears and heart belonged to Tim'M. Thank you for staying in the game for so many years.

You slept on the best album of 2004!
Yes, you did, but there's no reason to sleep on it any longer. Tim'm's solo debut is hands down the best CD of 2004 and still commanding and demanding play in 2005. A savvy blend of hip hop, spoken word, house, jazz, trip hop and soul, he takes you on a journey from the Red Dirt of Arkansas to the streets of Oakland. Beautifully sung, with impeccable phrasing and timing, there are grooves here for the head, heart and feet, sometimes all at the same time. Tim'm states unequivocally that his music is straight-up hip hop and not a sidebar in the genre, and his astonishing flow, the wealth of images and a surfeit of stories that would supply other artists' entire careers back him up. So wake up, sleepy head, and jump on this immediately. You'll be thanking your alarm clock for sure!

Like good sex with youron a sunny morning, Tim'm West is the new voice of this ERA. Marrying the vocals of Hip Hop to the sounds of House he is daring to going where no man has gone before. Listening pleasure from Track to Track this CD is definetly a journey that will leave red dirt on your feet...support the man his work. A prophetic piece that will constantly rotate in your cd player.

I'm feelin' it...
This CD is awesome. The more I listen, the more I feel it. It's all here, the rhythm, the lyrics, the tempo, the voice and while I do not want to pigeon-hole this music (everyone should own this CD), I do wish to express how wonderful it is feel QPOC representation. It has the beats and rhythms that feel like home without the exclusionary heteronormativity, stereotypes and sexism typical in much of hip hop. I cannot wait for the next CD.

it’s more memoir than text alone can provide
The companion to his poetry autobiography, Red Dirt Revival, West’s solo debut is a free-flowing mix of spoken word and music in raps and grooves including hip-hop, house, and jazz. In his beautiful baritone, West, an openly gay emcee (he’s a member of Deep Dickollective), poet, and scholar, creates distinct musical chapters to illuminate his rural Arkansas childhood, his crush on another boy (the smooth “Analytics”), and growing up as a black man in America. West’s superbly schizophrenic style is an immutable part of his experience; it’s more memoir than text alone can provide.

"Songs for Red Dirt" is eclectic, diverse, experimental but not without cause
Songs from Red Dirt is one of the more refreshing CD's I've heard in a while. With today's music so heavily saturated with mainstream hip-pop garbage, Tim'm (a member of Deep Dickollective) drives us back to the basics of human lyric. Tim'm takes his life, puts it in his music, and pushes the envelope. As for the music, just imagine that you're at one of your favorite dance clubs with hip-hop on the first floor and house on the second. Tim'm creates this atmosphere on one CD. Additionally, through a masterful blend of spoken word, West shares his coming of age story from "Ten" to "Thirty". Tracks like "Anticipatience" and "Playboys, Playgirls" nostalgically move your hips, whereas "Analytics" and "Elemental" force you to bob your head. It's simply incredible. On this solo project, Tim'm shows us his diversified style and musical influences. While known mostly for rapping and poetry, Tim'm performs a few vocal cameos on tracks like "Red Dirt" and "Welcome to Your Life". "Songs for Red Dirt" is eclectic, diverse, experimental but not without cause; definitely a breath of fresh air and a new voice in music.

Tim'm First Full Length Effort Is What's Missing In Soul Music Today
Songs from Red Dirt is a candid journey into a world evident of what’s missing in soul music today. There’s no copying what’s popular on the radio but an honest approach to song writing and delivery. Tim’m is Tim’m, so innovative in his style while moving effortlessly from hip-hop, spoken words and my favorite of his expressions - soothing vocals perfect for an easy Sunday morning. I bought two copies of his CD (one for the car and one for home) and can’t wait for the next one. And while major labels have yet to catch up, Tim’m remains one of today’s true pioneers of hip-hop and soul music. Don’t sleep on Songs from Red Dirt.

A ride you won't soon forget.....
This CD will touch you in places you never knew you had. A combination of styles so unique it is amazing that Tim'm is still "underground". All you need is a drop of soul or a half count of rhythm. Those are the signs that will tell you to add this to your Top 20 favorite CDs. Brilliant!!

Tim'm mixes everything surprisingly well
Tim'm manages to combine all different forms of soul music to present a hiphop album the likes of which do not come along very often. This album stands out when Tim'm decides to become introspective on songs like Ten, and Red Dirt, where you really get a chance to hear exactly where he derives his inspiration from. In places that the album falls short can only be attributed to ambition and you can never fault a brotha for that. This is a good album and can make you feel like you need to do a better job of loving your roots.

Songs From Red Dirt... a staple in my DJ Case!
I met Tim'm about a year ago and got ahold of a copy of his cd Songs From Red Dirt... what an amazing record! You won't find any of that meaningless hip-hop stuff that's a dime-a-dozen these days... (If I hear one more song about getting crunk and girls backing it up I'll go crazy)! Tim'm brings his life experiences into play with deep heartfelt lyrics and funky beats that get you moving. I can play Tim'm in my hip-hop sets and my house sets... what other artist can you say that about? Grab this CD now... you'll be glad you did.
