Salina Underground

It will be easy when you know how incredibly good The Sweep are . . .
Cincinnati band The Sweep's eponymously titled third album (also known as "III") is one of THOSE records -- put it on, sit back, get lost. It is utterly listenable, from start to finish.

The Sweep seamlessly merge electro-influenced psychadelia with rock songcraft. Their lyrics are a bit opaque; they lend just enough mystery to the soundscape to keep us interested in prying back the album's layers. Go see them live, if you can find them -- they take the stage unassumingly, throw down an astonishingly good set and, as everyone blinks in wonder, they'll break down and melt back into the venue etherea. You might meet them and never know they played. One recalls Keyser Soze: indie rock ghosts.

When we first learned of them, we were sitting in a small coffeeshop near the University of Cincinnati. The mellow behind the counter was grooving "It Will Be Easy When You Know." Nearly simultaneously (and independently, mind you), two of us asked who and what was playing. An answer: "You don't know them. But they're fantastic."

Indeed. Now we do. And so you should.
