Album Notes
"Welcome to Happy Hour at the Saxon Pub!"
No matter who's on stage, you know you're in the right place when you here these words.
A central hub in the prolific Austin, TX music scene, the Saxon has hosted some of the finest names in the game for years. It was on this fabled stage that the South Austin Moonlighters were born. Each of these talented musicians were already earning their reputations as masters of their craft in separate groups. Josh Zee burning up the fretboard in the fabulous Mother Truckers. Phil Bass smacking the skins for Monty Montgomery. Phil Hurley singing and playing lead guitar in Stonehoney. And, Lonnie Traveno Jr. holding down the bottom end for Deadman.
An idea was born during SXSW 2011 to bring these talented friends together for the simple joy of playing some deep cuts and favorite tunes. A series of happy hour gigs at the Saxon Pub were booked. And a new Austin favorite was born.
Drawing on their common ability to write and sing, each of the members starting to introduce original material to the set and a whole new sound was created.
With influences as diverse as soul, blues, country, '60's pop, and hard rock, the Moonlighters can take you on a musical ride through the history of American music. With each member taking a turn as lead vocalist, the set is constantly evolving. And the harmony vocals are to die for.
The rock solid rythym section lays down a firm bed on which the twin lead guitars players can really explore. Rarely has there been a group with two more different, yet equally inspiring soloists.
The sum total of these skills await you on this cd. Recorded over the course of three shows, these are some of the best moments, despite failing amps, broken air conditioners and too many tequila shots. Much love to our incredible audience for sticking it out with us!
We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.
Help yourself to a slice of South Austin, Texas...Moonlighters style!
