Album Notes
Alec Wilder's music was always hard to categorize. He wrote prolifically from the late 1930's through the 1970's -- operas, children's music, film scores, his own unique hybrid of classical and jazz orchestral music, and many popular songs. He focused on writing for those instruments that rarely get the solos -- tuba, trombone, bassoon -- as well as writing for unusual combinations of instruments. While his orchestral music earned him admirers in the jazz world, many of his popular songs -- most written in the 1940's and '50's -- became beloved standards and have been recorded by singers like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Chet Baker, Mabel Mercer, and many more. Susannah B and her longtime collaborator/arranger John Ballinger have updated Wilder's classic aesthetic with a modern, witty, groove-driven feel, using a wide range of instruments -- B3 Hammond organ, hand pan, alto flute, muted trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone, clarinet, electric & upright bass, guitars, piano and more -- and created a fun, swinging soundtrack for cocktails, housecleaning, or an intimate dinner party. Susannah B's wide vocal range and chameleon-like, sensual voice bring Wilder's beautiful, haunting melodies to a modern audience of music-lovers everywhere.
