ABOUT THIS ALBUM

AKA Scott Holt

Every once in a while someone will come along who is able to take a musical instrument to a completely different level.
In this case, the instrument was a Kalimba, also known as the "thumb piano". The Kalimba is played by holding the instrument in the hands and plucking the tines with the thumbs. The enharmonic overtones are strongest in the attack and die out rather quickly, leaving an almost pure tone. When any tine is plucked, the adjacent tines also vibrate, and these harmonizing secondary vibrations serve a similar role to the harmonic overtones of a string instrument - they increase the harmonic complexity of an individual note.
It was Scott Holt who came along and had a vision of not just playing one at a time but 13 differently scaled Kalimbas at the same time. This is his story.

From my very first experience with a kalimba, I liked it. It has this curiously sonorous tone and the great percussive plunk. I started experimenting with five professionally constructed and tuned kalimbas. Each played a different musical scale or chord. I was encouraged by my “kalimba mentor,” Mark Haldaway of Kalimba Magic, to try out each kalimba to see which one I liked. I could return the rest at no cost!

Thing was I liked them all and thought it would be interesting if I could combine them into a single multi-kalimba instrument. I knew this would be a unique application of this instrument, and I was right- nobody else is doing this! I got busy designing and testing new ways of mounting the instruments. Before long I had the 5 kalimbas mounted to a specially designed wooden stand. I then added 8 more Kalimbas, along with a 20-channel dual effects soundboard, which became part of the whole instrument

Next, I found an open-minded drummer and real songs with real names and arrangements began taking shape in my apartment. Eventually I got my songs heard by the production team of Danny Lomenzo and Todd East at Northworthy Studios in Victor, New York.

From there came the music you are hearing today. Because there has been such an overwhelming positive response to my music, I have decided to make it available to the public. I hope you enjoy listening to my music as much as I enjoy composing and playing it.
