Album Notes
Mark Stein

Mark Stein was the lead vocalist, keyboardist of "Vanilla Fudge". Mark first founded the Vanilla Fudge in 1966 at the age of 18, with members Tim Bogert, Vinny Martell, and Carmine Appice. In the short time they were together the band enjoyed their first giant success with their first Atco release self titled "Vanilla Fudge".

This was a ground breaking album since it was the first album to reach top ten on Billboard's charts without a hit single. The legendary rock arrangement of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" became their first hit single some two years after the release of the first album.

During the late 60's the Fudge were one of rock's most exciting high energy touring bands, setting the stage for the likes of Jimmy Hendrix, Deep Purple, and even Led Zeppelin. These legendary rockers spread their musical and performing influences throughout the world, and it has been quoted in print by many of today's classic rock stars such as Led Zeppelin,Yes,Deep Purple, and others that Vanilla Fudge had a profound effect during the musical renaissance of the late 60's, that carried through to the present.

After the demise of the Fudge, Mark took a hiatus from the "Rock Wars" and decided to develop his writing and playing skills further. After flirting with a solo career, where he had a single released in England on the Phil Spector International label he resurfaced with the Tommy Bolin Band in the mid 70's. This was a highly regarded group that had the likes of Narda Michael Walden on drums, Reggie McBride on bass, Norma Jean Bell on sax, and Mark on keyboards and sharing the vocals with Tommy. This was a high energy rock/fusion influenced band that attracted people like John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, and Jeff Beck to name a few to come see the band live. It was during that time that Mark had added muti-synthesizers to his already distinctive B-3 organ sound. Mark toured and recorded with Bolin (Private Eyes) album. Mark left the Bolin band just prior to Bolin's death at 25 years old.

After working on several writing projects, Mark joined Alice Cooper on the "Welcome To My Nightmare" show and toured Australia and New Zealand. Upon his return to the states he hooked up with Dave Mason who produced Mark's solo album on CBS Records in 1979. Mason then asked Mark to join forces with him and Mark toured and recorded with David for the better part of four years. Mark penned five tunes on Mason's "Old Crest On A New Wave" album, which also had a guest vocal appearance by Michael Jackson.

In 1983 Mark re-signed with Atlantic Records to do a Vanilla Fudge reunion album entitled "Mystery". In 1987 the Fudge did a three month U.S. tour, and recorded a "live" album during some of those dates. Mark had the original multitracks transferred to ProTools and has produced the CD entitled "The Real Deal" which will be released in February 2004. This is the only authentic Vanilla Fudge live album with ALL the original members. The last time the band appeared live with Mark was at Atlantic 40th Anniversary show in May of 1988 at Madison Square Garden.

Mark has just released his solo CD entitled "White Magik" with his all star band, Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets) on bass, Bobby Rondinelli (Black Sabbath/Rainbow) on drums, John McCurry (Paul McCartney/Julian Lennon) on guitars and Jim Campagnola (Eric Clapton/Natalie Cole) on sax. White Magik will be released in tandem with the live Vanilla Fudge CD "The Real Deal" Both are on Crystal Wind Records.

Classic Eye Review: Mark Stein - White Magik

Our Rating:
4½ out of 5 Gold CDs

Part of the late 60s music revolution, Mark Stein is the original lead singer and keyboardist for Vanilla Fudge, a band renowned for covering classic soul, R& B and contemporary pop songs in an unconventional, symphonic and psychedelic style. The group, which also included guitarist Vinnie Martell, bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice, traversed the world with such support acts as Three Dog Night, Canned Heat, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin before calling it a day in the early 70s. From there, between attempts at a solo career, Stein became a noted sideman with Tommy Bolin, Alice Cooper and Dave Mason. Sporadic reunions with the Fudge in the 80s never quite gained the momentum to take it any further. Through it all, Stein's talents as a singer and instrumentalist have yet to fade. After years of silence, White Magik, the long-awaited Mark Stein solo debut, is solid confirmation of that. Supported by an A-list of players including Bobby Rondinelli on drums, Jimmy Haslip on bass, John McCurry on guitar, and Jim Campagnola on saxophone, Stein rips through seven new original songs and three exquisite covers that discerningly capitalize on the man's unequivocal capabilities. The CD sustains a running thread that intertwines a sense of national pride with cynicism and inquisition on cuts like "American Dream," "Shame On Humanity," "Prime Time Soldier" and the hopeful "Let's Pray For Peace." On a lighter note, "A Natural High" and "After All" are majestic ballads that soar in melodic splendor. And who could resist the mesmerizing renditions of Otis Redding's "I've Been Lovin' You Too Long" and Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" that underscore Stein's unabated range as a singer and stylist. Exclusively available from the Mark Stein Web Site, White Magik is a soulful and spirited musical celebration from one of the most unique and powerful voices of the last 50 years.
