ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Soulajar has never made any bones about what they do best; it’s built right into their name. The journey began in 2002 when drummer Brian Boozer and guitarist Ryan Fergon were introduced; bassist Greg Bettis joined just a year later. What started as a 4-piece group with revolving singers has led the band to where they are today – an onstage lineup of 7 musicians that has remained unusually consistent.

By 2009, Soulajar’s lineup was solidified in collaboration with vocalist Jim Ranger, keyboardist Daniel Hardy, saxophonist Chris Nguyen, and trumpeter Brent Williams. Angling toward something new that makes use of an older model, Soulajar taps into 70’s soul-jazz and funky stylings pioneered by the likes of Grant Green, James Brown, Jimmy Smith, and Booker T.

“Between Here and There” is the second and latest studio album by Soulajar, featuring seven new, original songs that together stand as a testament to the hard work, open-mindedness, and versatility of the group. The album features nine original songs that, together, stand as a testament to the hard work and growth of the band over the past several years. This new music has given us the opportunity to experiment with new styles and sounds, making it a diverse and personal story of growth. “Between Here and There” features plenty of the soulful, fun-loving grooves you’ve come to expect from Soulajar, yet you’ll hear us dive a bit deeper into the modern jazz realm with our instrumental music as well as some continued exploration into neo-soul, and even some hip hop. Featuring special guest vocalists: Lindsay Lucas, Truth Ali, Eddie Brock of the Epixx, and Scott Roberts.

“…wet with enough sweat to make it greasy, yet pretty damn polished for a young band. And when they turn the lights down low, Soulajar knows how to lay it on as smooth and buttery as the Rev. Al Green – no lie.”
Brian Robbins – Relix Magazine
