ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
'Five By Five' is an attempt to give kudos to the more traditional 'rock and roll guitar hero' formula of the sixties through the eighties, with a little more of a technological twist.

A smattering of ambient and experimental is thrown in, with lots of fusion stylings in the traditional layout of guitars, bass, keyboard, and a strong back-beat on the drums.

"Sonic Bodhi's new release entitled, "Five By Five", is a fast paced journey through a plethora of sonic realms. The stunning art work that makes up the packaging, conceived and created by Sonic himself, sets the stage for a fascinating listening experience lasting well over an hour."- John Pedersen, Musician and Keyboardist (Groovidi and New Age Masters, also available on CD Baby)

A Compelling Musical Journey
Sonic Bodhi's new release entitled, "Five By Five", is a fast paced journey through a plethora of “sonic” realms. The stunning art work that makes up the packaging, conceived and created by Sonic himself, sets the stage for a fascinating listening experience lasting well over an hour.

Although the 16 instrumental tracks that make up the album were written and performed by Sonic Bodhi using a variety of musical tools such as, bass, keyboards, drums and percussion, the focus here is on the guitar. In the liner notes Mr. Bodhi sums up his artistic vision for this work stating, "This album is an attempt to give kudos to the more traditional 'rock and roll guitar hero' formula of the sixties through the eighties, with a little more of a technological twist."

The opening track, "5 X 5", leads us into a rock and roll paradise of sorts that ends with a very clever conclusion. Next up is the more downtempo, "Landing", featuring lush electric piano and a very convincing Hammond Organ sample. "Think Of It" is a very rocking song with great lead guitar and jamming drums. Another rocker is, "Transmogrify", with its brilliant lead guitar work accompanied by a very electronic rhythm section. Other standouts include, "The Psilopds", and, "Dublin Eyes", continuing the emphasis on fabulous guitar leads and inspired keyboard work.

As a contrast to the more uptempo offerings, Sonic Bodhi provides some quieter moments on the album as well. His warm and fantastic acoustic guitar stylings are present on, "Satellite", and "Retro Chemical". Other tunes in this collection have a strong jazz fusion influence as evidenced by tasteful electric piano, acoustic bass and syncopated drumming.

Several songs even deviate quite a bit from the "formula" and venture into progressive rock territory. "Serigraf" is one such tune. Another track firmly ensconced in the progressive rock fusion format is, "Spy vs Spy". With its catchy James Bond-esque melody, Allman Brothers like guitar stylings and amazing chord changes, "Spy vs Spy" is my favorite song on this project.

The album ends with a wonderful piece entitled, "Pilgimage", that features Sonic Bodhi's multitracked acoustic and electric guitars playing within the fabric of a layer of lush strings atop a light groove of organic percussion. Sonic Bodhi's masterful riffing and comping are bathed in a delightful reverb that may very well be the album's most cohesive and inspiring moment.

"Five By Five", or, "5 X 5", if you prefer, is a collection of rock solid instrumentals that traverse a variety of musical landscapes. Presented in impeccable crystal clear sonic quality, this release was produced by Sonic Bodhi and comes highly recommended.
