ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born and raised in Hollywood, half Danish and half Jewish-Polish, and the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Pasadena, CA and Los Angeles-based Solvej Schou (SOUL-vye SKOH) has been belting and singing since she was a kid. She showcases a raw and bluesy rock 'n' roll vocal strut with guitar, bass and drums—performing live with a full band—inspired by the likes of Janis Joplin, X, Pretenders, Etta James, PJ Harvey, Bikini Kill and Patti Smith. Hailed by Flavorwire for her “lightning riffs and hear-me-roar attitude,” Schou has played solo and in bands (Bitch & Moan, The Lassiebeat, Racquet, Naughty Bird) in Los Angeles, NYC and Copenhagen, Denmark. Her music covers everything from grief, loss, social justice and American identity to being a saucy woman.

Personal and political, loud and passionate, Schou’s new full-band solo album Quiet For Too Long was released digitally and on red vinyl in June 2019. “It's a record that reflects this current political climate: If your nerves aren't charged and tingling by the end, your emotions at tipping point, you aren't paying attention,” LA Weekly wrote about the album as its album of the week. Schou has been interviewed about Quiet For Too Long by outlets including LA Weekly, KPCC 89.3 FM’s The Frame, KSPC 88.7 FM, LAist.com and NPR.

On the album, Schou dives into issues ranging from police brutality, anti-immigrant fervor, gun violence, gender equality and powerful womanhood to mortality, depression, love and David Bowie’s death. It’s no wonder that as a teenager Schou performed as part of the Riot Grrrl-led scene of female artists in Los Angeles and at cultural hub Regeneración (co- founded by Rage Against the Machine’s Zack de la Rocha).

Quiet For Too Long is filled with Schou’s belted vocals and driving guitar, and also features talented Chelsea Jean Speer-Guzman (VesuviaSonic, Modern Time Machines, Chelsea Jean) on bass and back-up vocals, Eric Hasenbein (12 dirty lovers) on lead guitar, and Bryan Bos (Goldenboy, Moonwash, Crossed Keys) on drums. Produced by Schou, the album was recorded, mixed and engineered at L.A.’s Station House Studio in Echo Park by Mark Rains, who recorded Alice Bag’s recent solo albums. The album was mastered by Marsh Mastering's Stephen Marsh (The Donnas, Ozomatli, Los Lobos) in Hollywood, and was pressed to vinyl by L.A.'s Rainbo Records. Artist Delbar Shahbaz painted a bold portrait of Schou for the album’s cover, with the cover design by Braveland. The record is available digitally on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and CD Baby, and as vinyl through CD Baby and at L.A. area record stores including Amoeba Music.

Schou has performed with groups such as Gossip, at festivals including CMJ, Make Music Pasadena and the Eclectic, at venues including NYC's the Knitting Factory, Seattle's Funhouse and Copenhagen's Christianshavn Bådudlejningand, and at L.A. clubs such as the Whiskey, Roxy, Redwood Bar, Taix, The Smell, Cafe NELA and The Echo.
