Album Notes
Recorded and produced in the field over 3 years, with the descendants of the ancient voyaging seafarers, the indigenous people of islands across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Using only traditional instruments and languages recorded in nature, artists shared a song on their homeland, and contributed overdubs to other songs, woven into an oceanic songline of 18 songs without digital effects and mastered at Real World Studios. Motivated by the steady march of environmental and cultural loss across the region, artists reach beyond the last 500 years of imposed languages and borders to reunite their shared seafaring ancestry, exploring culture connections and voicing common concerns.

Just before Christmas 2014 we drove out of Alice Springs, central Australia, a project manager and a music producer, our world packed away in storage. We had 5,000 dollars between us and a vision of creating a landmark album with the most respected and famous artists of the Indian and Pacific Ocean region. You are holding that album.
We were worried about the steady loss of nature and culture throughout the oceans, so we approached those who speak for the trees, sing for the oceans, artists whose communities have lived in their place the longest, artists who have sought out and continue their cultural heritage.
We invited these artists to share a song in their language, a song that proudly represents their homeland. The artists played their songs on the instruments of their people, in a natural setting, a place with meaning for them. In celebration all these artists shared their music, overdubbing onto the songs of other musicians like them.
We discovered such committed, big-hearted artists right across the vast oceans. We found ourselves in tearfully beautiful places recording instruments we could never have imagined. We learnt of the incredible ancestry they all shared, from Madagascar to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Aotearoa (New Zealand) along the ocean currents and seasonal winds, back over 5,000 years to a beach on an island we now know as Taiwan. This is the music of the Austronesians, the ancient seafarers.
We also found plenty of laughter, a deep lived love for the land and an uplifting appreciation for all the people across the world who believe we are a part of nature’s delicate web and not the masters of it.
In the end, it's all about the music, contemporary and traditional, poignant and playful. This music is a gift from these artists to you. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed recording it. So please, join us on an oceanic voyage across these island communities too precious to lose.
