ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

My name is Shawn Ellison. I have been accompanying ballet classes since 1982. During that time, I have worked with a wide variety of teachers, dancers, and choreographers. I have composed music for dance performances, and have played live on stage with dancers.

This album is designed to be used in a ballet class setting. However, it is my hope that listeners will find other uses for this music--choreography, modern dance, or simply enjoying the listening experience.

The music contained here is all improvised. Although I have played for ballet classes for decades, I have always relied on my improvisation skills rather than playing traditional pieces from actual ballets. And although I have some classical training, I actually feel more at home in the realm of jazz, so improvisation comes naturally to me.

What’s with the bird names? There are numerous albums out in the world designed for use in ballet class. Most of the titles are fairly generic, named after musical forms (waltz or tango, for example), or dance steps (like pliés or jetés). I thought it would be more fun, and perhaps make this recording stand out from the crowd, if I went in a different direction. I have always been fascinated with birds, and so I chose birds as the theme. Each piece is named after a different species of birds. So, even though the pliés piece is named “Cardinal” and the grand battement piece is called “Ostrich,” I believe students and teachers will soon become familiar with the various pieces. Furthermore, a dance teacher is free to mix and match the pieces with their dance combinations.

I really enjoyed putting this collection together. It is my sincere hope that you will enjoy listening and moving to this music.
