Folk/blues troubadour Spencer Bohren threads that indelible image through a post-Katrina landscape laced with the menace and moan of a slow-crawl, doomsday acoustic slide guitar. His unflinching narration resonates with the authority of an Old Testament prophet. “The Long Black Line” could serve as the soundtrack to a Katrina documentary, but video footage would be redundant – Bohren's song paints an all-too-vivid picture.

CD Received OK. This is the first Spencer Bohren album that I have bought and I will be back for more. Title track is excellent and I loved the pedal steel om Ode to Billie Joe (although I felt the vocal did not reach the same heights). The rest of the album (covers and originals) is very good indeed.

I've seen Spencer a couple of times live on his visits to the UK and been mightily impressed. He played the title track from this album the last time I saw him and although it has taken a while, I've finally got the album. The album cost is worth it for the title track alone, the metronomic "ticking clock" rhythm sets the song perfectly and Spencer's vocal (a bit of an acquired taste) is wonderful. The usual ration of old blues covers from the likes of Blind Willie Johnson, Tommy Johnson and so on contrast nicely with less obvious choices such as "Ode to Billy Joe". Plus there is always Spencer's great guitar technique to enjoy. An album to go back to time after time - highly recommended.

I loved the cd one heck of a song writer. Deportees is a powerful song as is the long black line. I lot of power in these songs and a lot of truth in the words, people need to listen. I loved hearing canned heat an old blues song redone great. The slide was ausome. Well worth the money.

Great storytelling,arresting lap steel guitar and fabulous careworn vocals
Spencer Bohren delivers meaningful lyrics of great stories-in-songs with a careworn gruffness that betrays vast experience of life's ups and downs. He plays truly stunning lapsteel guitar and excellent other guitar styles too. This is an excellent set involving some superb narratives like Ode To Billy Joe,and The Long Black Line that is redolent of the New Orleans floods that affected him personally.Having seen Spencer on his tour of the Uk this year I am making up for lost time acquiring his back catalogue which reach great heights of performance quality. You would do a lot worse then to invest in the Long Black Line CD as a great starting point to your Spencer Bohren collection.

I enjoyed most of the songs on this album. "Somebody on Your Bond" was my favorite, with exquisite, haunting guitar work. I highly recommend this album.

The Long Black Line
My husband and I first heard The Long Black Line on our fabulous community radio station KXCI here in Tucson, AZ. Something about it immediately caught our attention. Very uncharacteristically (our musical tastes are usually at opposite ends of the spectrum), he and I both stopped what we were doing, walked silently over to the sofa, sat down, and stayed there--mesmerized--until the spell Spencer had woven with his voice and guitar ended.
I was raised in the New Orleans area, and many of my family and friends were directly impacted by Katrina's devastation. Somehow this simple yet profound song --maybe that slow, continuous plucking of a single guitar string throughout the song--triggered a response that has been lying suppressed deep within me since the storm.
I love Spencer's style and sound. The rest of the CD is fabulous, too!
