ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Love.Sex.Death... was the title of the first cabaret presented by long-time collaborators and friends singer/actress SARAH CHALFY and pianist JOCELYN DUECK. In more than a decade of musical partnership, Sarah and Jocelyn have blended a dedication to language and attention to detail with passion and irreverence, spinning fresh takes on classical and theatrical music both old and new. In the intimacy and immediacy of a cabaret atmosphere, they find fresh perspective on the “classical” chamber repertoire for which they have always shared a love. This album reflects their quest to break down the barriers between classical and cabaret, highbrow and lowbrow, as they explore the universal themes of Love, Sex and Death.

SARAH CHALFY is a versatile performer, whose musical and theatrical adventures have led her from medieval plainchant and Renaissance polyphony through contemporary electronica, musical theatre and cabaret. A specialist in premiering new works, she has created or premiered lead roles in: Artemisia: Light and Shadow (one-woman show featuring music by Strozzi and Cavalli), What to Wear (opera by Michael Gordon/Richard Foreman), ADA (opera by Kim D. Sherman), Stunt Girl (musical by David Friedman/Peter Kellogg), Van Gogh (opera by Michael Gordon), 27 rue de Fleurus (Off-Broadway musical by Lisa Koch/Ted Sod).

As a collaborative musician, Sarah has performed with some of New York City’s most influential new music ensembles, including Alarm Will Sound, Newspeak, and NOW. On the early music front, she has been a frequent soloist with ARTEK, Early Music New York, and others. She has collaborated with and premiered works by many of today’s leading composers, including Michael Gordon, David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, O+A (Bruce Odland/Sam Auinger), Judd Greenstein, David Mallamud, David Friedman, and Kim D. Sherman, among others. She has recorded on the Canteloupe, New Amsterdam, and Innova labels. She spent her early career as an operatic crossover soprano, performing lead soprano roles in regional opera, Off-Broadway, and regional theatres across the United States.

Sarah regularly performs her solo cabaret act at venues across NYC and the northeastern USA. Sarah did her graduate studies at Manhattan School of Music, and undergraduate at the Peabody Conservatory. She was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and received grants to study at the Universität Mozarteum Sommerakademie and L’Académie Internationale d’Eté de Nice.
