The best hard rock release of 2018 - no question!
Some great music is made every year but in 2018 the best was kept until last when Grooveyard Records released Revolution Highway’s self-titled debut just before Christmas. Revolution Highway is big news on the hard rock and metal circuit, a supergroup that brings together seasoned veterans that broke through and earned their stripes with other great outfits, most notably the awesome axman of Super Vintage, Stavros Papadopoulos, and vocalist David Fefolt formerly fronting FireWolfe and Angels of Babylon. In Revolution Highway they are joined by Chris Lagios on drums and John Christopoulos on bass. Lagios is an old mate of Stavros’ and has worked with him in several bands and projects over the years, Freerock Saints, Universal Hippies and Hard Driver to name a few.
Stavros’ work with the axe is legendary among the legions of European hard and heavy rock fans. His superb and outstandingly brilliant guitar work and songwriting landed Super Vintage centre stage on the European rock scene, not so many years ago, and himself among the chosen few that rank as the greatest talents of his generation. That can all be heard on this mightily great disc. Stavros’s phenomenal guitar is here in all its glory, mercilessly played and pushed to its limits, the man himself standing on the edge and taking risks as never before, totally fearless with no respect for any boundaries. There were thrilling moments on this album when I thought he had got himself in too deep, that he wasn’t going to pull it off – he always did! He always does!
David Fefolt, another great name gracing the hard rock billboard, has lent his vocal talent to a string of well known American rock outfits, most notably (and recently) FireWolf and Angels of Babylon. I can’t help thinking that during his time with these two bands (probably all his other bands also) they had, arguably, the best heavy rock vocalist on the planet! Someone who can proudly and confidently take his seat among the genre’s greatest: Gillan, Coverdale, Hughes, Dio. (There is a reason I place him among the greatest vocalists of the Purple family – read further.)
Revolution Highway is no recycling of Super Vintage or Angels of Babylon or any of Stavros’ and Fefolt’s former bands. With Revolution Highway Stavros’ guitar is even harder and the sound grittier than we are used to and when accompanied by Fefolt’s vocals the band ventures into Purple territory. When listening to the album for the first time the thought actually entered my mind that if the great Purple were being formed now, this is what they might sound like and this would be their music. That’s how good Revolution Highway is! The music on this album is sheer brilliance, classic rock at its best, heavy and hard, with every member of the band rising to the challenge of delivering the best that is currently found on the global rock scene. I said so much earlier: this is the best rock album of 2018!
In Stavros and Fefolt we may have two of the iconic names of the European and American hard and heavy rock scene but make no mistake about this band: Revolution Highway does not throw together star musicians from older class acts in some desperate hope that they will somehow do magic and reproduce past glories and the fame of their former outfits. That old supergroup formula has been tried and tested several times in the past to no avail.
Revolution Highway is not plagued by any such vanities. Past glories, achievements or egos don’t get in the way here. These guys gel together and produce music, fresh and exciting as the great giants of rock used to do back in the olden days. What stands out, and strikingly so, on this album is the Stavros/Fefolt partnership, the guitar and the vocals. We haven’t heard anything like this since Blackmore/Gillan, Blackmore/Coverdale, Page/Plant. In Revolution Highway, driven by Stavros’ monstrous guitar, Fefolt has found the perfect outfit to carry his vocals; you won’t find anyone better around. These two make the perfect guitar/vocals partnership. Spectacularly so!
Revolution Highway has all the ingredients and potential that made the great bands that blazed the trail in the past; stellar artists in every seat, brilliant songs and ideas and music that brings the best of the classic past to the present. We can only hope that they will stick around to produce and give us more of the same. Bands like this are a glittering rarity that reminds us of the brilliant art form classic rock is when the right people gets involved. People that can create magic.
