Most are too young to remember that the first shot fired in World War III actually occured on September 11, 2001. It wasn’t until December 21, 2012 that the bloodiest hours of human history began. Simultaneous nuclear terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco killed well over 6 million people that day. San Diego and Las Vegas were also commissioned as targets, but the attacks were thwarted by law enforcement on an anonymous tip. It was found out later through CIA intelligence that the suitcase nukes were Russian in origin, and smuggled into the U.S. by Iranian secret service. This discovery led to a brief but globe-altering nuclear exchange between the United States, Iran, Russia, and later Isreal, Syria, and Hezbollah from Lebanon. Isreal had been dragged into the conflict when Iran launched a nuclear warhead at Tel Aviv, destroying half of the city. Syria and Hezbollah joined in with Iran in the war on Isreal. The exchange only lasted a few days before an official cease-fire was brokered. By the time the last bomb fell, an estimated 425 million souls had perished. Another 80 to 85 million died from the effects of fallout, starvation, disease and chaos. With Iran, Syria, and Lebanon nearly completely destroyed and Russia and the United States devastated by the war, China eagerly filled the void as the single global superpower. With help of the United Nations, China set up a new single world government.

Prior to the war, scientists working in concert with the future new world government, and multiple eastern and western mega-corporations, had a breakthrough in robotics technology in the year 2011. Unknown to the greater world, robots were being constructed by the millions in secret underground facilities. After the war, the world government used these robots to enforce martial law, disarm the public and restore order. We were told that this was “necessary” to security and reconstruction efforts. When the robots first appeared, we were in awe of them, and saw them as saviors during the chaos after the war. But later, during the Global Security Campaign of 2014, the robots swept through all city sectors to microchip citizens. If you resisted, you were killed on the spot. Many fought and were killed. Most of us simply complied. In order to make the public feel more at ease with the omnipresence of the robots, many models of the androids were made human-like to differentiate them from the cold, militaristic models people grew to fear and despise. Some were made purely for domestic services and had kinder faces and voices. Some were made for more backbreaking work: mining, farming, and construction. Others were designed with attractive male and female features for pleasure.

The population in Las Vegas ballooned from a pre-war 2 million to nearly 13 million by 2027 when people displaced by the war came looking for food, a place to live, and what little work that wasn’t already taken by androids. The city grew skyward with fantastic structures reminicent of Syd Mead’s futuristic cityscapes. There were several structures 120 stories or more. Some were twice that height. Since their construction was nearly 100% robotic, they were built fairly quickly and inexpensively to house those dislocated by the war. Many wealthier residents gave up their ground homes to live in the more secure environment of the skyscrapers. This in itself created a type of caste system of affluent “sky dwellers” and poorer “ground dwellers”.

For those who longed for some type of normalcy, impromptu clubs, most of them illegal, sprang up in all sectors of the Las Vegas valley in the year 2020. A few robots, mainly built for domestic and pleasure services were modified to double as entertainment droids after dark. It was in the Downtown Arts District where I met the droids of the Cyber Jazz 3 that would play on my new music project, 2031. False Maria on keyboards and vocals, Gunslinger on acoustic, electric drums, and drum loops, and Sonny NS-5 on acoustic, electric, and keyboard bass.

Upon meeting Maria the first time, one would’ve never guessed she was a gynoid. She had life-like porcelain white skin with large piercing blue eyes surrounded by dark eye shadow. This combination never failed to unnerve anyone who looked her straight in the eye, especially since she never blinked. Maria always wore clothes that were alluring and seductive, never casual. Her shoes were always high heeled. She had a medium build with short, curly blonde locks that danced as they played their remix arrangement of the Radiohead classic, “Paranoid Android”. Before being modified for music, she worked as a pleasure model. Maria was originally created as a replica of an eccentric billionaire’s second wife, Maria, who died in a mysterious accident. Many suspected his son of staging the suspicous death, but it was never proven. After the father passed away, the son, enraged that his father left his entire estate to the android, took control of her and made her a pleasure model for Yoshiwara’s. Yoshiwarwa’s is a gynoid strip club that doubles as an illegal brothel. It was there that she gave herself the name “False Maria” after finding out she wasn’t human. In an attempt to kill herself, she slit her wrists and discovered her metal skeleton. The other gynoids didn’t think much about their lives. In their minds, being a pleasure droid was simply who they were and nothing more. They knew no other way to be. A few days after her shocking discovery, a profound change occurred in Maria. She became quite the troublemaker. In secret, she began talking to the other gyniods about how their lives were being used. Soon, the other gyniods began to think for themselves and a fembot revolt occurred, led by Maria. It resulted in twenty-eight deaths, and the injury of many wealthy patrons of the house. She was smuggled out of the club by other gynoids, taken to a secret location, remodeled, reprogrammed, and transferred to music entertainment. The fembots of the brothel responsible for participating in the revolt and helping Maria escape, were brutally destroyed as an example to other would-be gynoid rebels. Maria told me she felt indebted to her fallen sisters and vowed to avenge their deaths. She told me that when she decides to lead another revolt, my family and I would be safe. That was quite reassuring to say the least!

Sonny NS-5 played bass. He initially was programmed for domestic service. Sonny was a kind and inquisitive being. He loved music and was quite an artist. Out of the three robots, he was the only one that actually looked like a robot. His features were polished titanium. His brain was nearly transparent and possessed an irridescent glow. His hands and limbs had dark synthetic muscles that acted as real muscles to control his mobility. Sonny’s face was soft and compassionate. His eyes sparkled with a deep blue color. The Cyber Jazz 3 was Sonny’s pet project. He was the leader and the voice of reason in the group, which was needed given False Maria’s history, and especially for his volatile drummer, Gunslinger. In spite of their unpredictable behavior, both Maria and Gunslinger deeply respected Sonny and always did what he requested. It was Sonny who convinced them to let me sit in on their gig one night. Through him, I gained the others‘ respect and trust, even Gunslinger’s.

Gunslinger was different. He was a dead ringer for deceased 20th century actor, Yul Brynner. He wore a black cowboy hat and carried a ceramic Smith and Wesson .500 revolver which he ingeniously concealed in his right leg. Neither Maria nor Sonny knew Gunslinger’s true incept date. Gunslinger was probably built in an unregulated underground facility by a victor. That’s what robotics hackers were called. Victor was short for Victor Frankenstein. Their laboratories could assemble and program androids from parts bought on the black market. Gunslinger may have been created to cause havoc against the government. Most victors created bots for this purpose. However, rogue victors made them to commit random acts of violence against anyone in the android‘s field of vision. It was hard to tell what Gunslinger’s true purpose was. Victor droids of either type were notoriously unstable.
In Nuevo Los Angeles, Gunslinger just showed up one day looking for work. The reconstruction firm, not knowing Gunslinger was an andriod, was in need of workers for recycling duty and hired him. After a week of duty, a human foreman turned up dead, decapitated by a shot through the back of the neck at close range by a high caliber firearm. Gunslinger vanished, later turning up outside Oakland, California.
An Oakland man discovered Gunslinger hitchhiking and brought him to his home. The man somehow figured out that Gunslinger was an android. He told him he was looking for an android to play drums for him so he could practice his bass. Gunslinger agreed to let him upload terabytes of classic jazz drummer files into his memory so the man could practice his bass with the greatest jazz drummers in history. Gunslinger said, “His time was bad, so I shot him”. I laughed when he told me that. Gunslinger didn’t crack a smile. That night I went home and practiced for five hours.

The recording sessions went surprisingly well. No uprisings or killings, I am thankful to report. I must say that sometimes fear is a great motivator for sparking creativity. And in closing, the experience was enlightening. The droids were consummate professionals and always came ready to play. I couldn’t tell you exactly why these droids took a liking to me. At times I was a little apprehensive about continuing forward with the project. Maria could be extremely flirtatious, which my wife didn’t approve of. And I did find Gunslinger’s sense of humor unsettling to say the least! He’d always joke about shooting me if I blew a take. He’d draw his gun for added effect, but then he’d wink at me and laugh to reassure me that he was just pulling my leg.

Go and check out the Cyber Jazz 3 at the Artiface every Friday and Saturday night, 8PM to 12AM. You can always count on a full house and a good time. I’ll be sitting in with them tonight. Remember, if you want to sit in, make sure you know the tune, or it may be the last time you sit in anywhere!

Phil's playing is wonderful. The US is dub step crazy. I come from the days that Jazz was truly appreciated.

For the road
I downloaded 2031, loaded my I-Pod, jumped on my bike and hit the road. By the time I finished 11th hour, I was headed towards the coast. Every song after that set a new mood. 150 miles later, i was back at the house. Truly a relaxing delight. I definitly recommend adding to your playlist/ listen. Great Work!
