Album Notes
Being true to one's self in today's music business can be a challenge for any musician. It is unusual when two guitarists can connect and not have to compromise the music they love. It is fortunate for Paul, Bert and listeners alike that they are traveling along the same road, "The Road That Sings To Me" which happens to be the latest CD released by these two artists.

The music on this CD is an assortment of standards, bossas and originals recorded on a variety of acoustic guitars. The guitar duo format creates a feeling of intimacy with the listeners, since both players are always exposed in either the soloist or accompanist role. The opening track Estate has a rhythmic Latin feel while the melody is rich with emotion. The solos are very lyrical as they are throughout the album. I Thought About You shows some clever interplay between Paul and Bert when they exchange 4's, 2's, 1's and finally interweave to get back into the melody. Recado Bossa Nova is an upbeat version of the Djalma Ferreira tune that was recorded on two very different sounding nylon string guitars. Duke Ellington's Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me has a bluesy feel that is played using harmonized bass lines giving the tune a toe tapping groove. This album also showcases each player as a solo artist; Bert playing Shades of Autumn and Emily by himself and Paul playing solo on Blue In Green and his original Forgiveness. Also featured on this CD are four other originals that highlight the compositional strength of each player. Two compositions from Bert demonstrate the very different feels between 6/8 time as in Something Else and 3/4 time as in Change of Colour. The other two compositions by Paul show the depth of emotion from which he writes. Julia's Room uses a pedal bass note over several bars to add tension to the lamenting melody. Untraveled Road was inspired by the cover painting by Peter Velesik. The odd number of bars is typical of Paul's writing since he often enjoys breaking tradition. Paul once stated, "I like to travel down a new road every time I play the guitar."

Fortunately Paul and Bert are traveling down the same road when they play music together. When not playing music, they may be seen trout fishing or hiking in the Kootenay back country that they both find so beautiful and inspiring. Their friendship certainly comes through in this nicely recorded music. The pastel shades and organic sound of acoustic guitars make this a worthy addition to any CD collection.

Paul Landsberg is a contemporary jazz composer and guitarist. In his thirty years as a performing guitarist he has performed with a variety of jazz and contemporary artists including: Kurt Elling, Roben Ford, Ernie Watts, Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden, Bob Mintzer, Dave Weckel, Lew Tabackin, Gunther Schuller, Ben E. King, the Platters, and the Drifters. Paul currently performs with the Paul Landsberg / Bert Peters acoustic guitar duo, the Paul Landsberg Quartet, Desafinado, and the Spokane Jazz Orchestra. Paul has been featured in many music festivals throughout the Northwest including: "Sandpoint Music Fest", "Chewelah Jazz and Blues Festival", "Kaslo Jazz Fest", and Eastern Washington University's "Jazz Dialogue 2000". Paul's debut CD, "Looking In", features his compositions with an all-star international quartet. He is the author of "Hearing and Writing Music" and other guitar books.
He taught for eight years at the prestigious, Berklee College of Music in Boston and holds a Masters Degree from the California Institute of the Arts He currently makes his home in Nelson, BC with his wife and six children and is one of the founding faculty members of the Selkirk College Music and Technology Program.

Bert Peters has been playing guitar for more than forty years. Born into a musical family, he played his first gig when he was twelve and gigged most weekends throughout his high school and college years. Although primarily self- taught, he has been influenced by guitarists Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery, Ed Bickert, and Oliver Gannon. Bert performed in Vancouver for ten years with many of Canada's finest jazz players, including Ron Johnston, Jack Stafford, Torben Oxbol, and John Nolan, all whom are featured on his CD, "Just For This Moment". Bert moved back to the Kootenay area of BC to raise his children in a country setting and has managed to stay active in the music business. Equally at home playing festivals, concerts, or studio sessions, he prefers the intimacy of playing smaller clubs where the musicians and listeners can connect at a more personal level. Bert composes music that has been described as "thoughtful and lyrical". His music is frequently heard on radio and television throughout Canada. Bert endorses Ted Thompson guitars.

"This CD shows what two can do when they have a common bond and love of acoustic guitars. A fine edition to Canadian jazz CD history".
Ron Johnston

""Chopin once said, "There is nothing more beautiful than the sound of a guitar", save two. Paul Landsberg and Bert Peters show this in spades"".
Paul Grant (CBC)

"These two guitarists are a treat to listen to and this is a beautiful CD! Enjoy.
Oliver Gannon

Fine, fine guitar jazz!!
Put this album on during a romantic candle lit dinner. It will definitely have the desired effect. But not before she compliments you on your impeccable taste in fine, fine guitar jazz. This one is great!

CD Baby

Taking the predictable stagnation out of smooth jazz and injecting a fresh, lilting direction guided by the resonant song of two acoustic guitars in tandem, this guitar duo presents both originals and standards in a lite jazz medium that goes down easy but not without notice. From lightly swinging numbers to bossa nova sways to loungey steamers well-suited for a martini, the album fulfills an often unmet need for music that is mellow, thoughtful and patient without being lackluster. This is ideal jazz for the acoustic-hearted fan.
