Album Notes
"A testament to the healing powers of rhythm... (it) should not go undiscovered." - Nylon

"There's post-rock, post-punk, and now, post-trip-hop. In the hands of the smoldering vocalist Marilyn Carino and the producer, bassist, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Rubin, down-tempo beats, haunted-matinée-style organ playing, and electronic flourishes coalesce into something familiar yet wholly unique." - The New Yorker

"Mudville features Marilyn Carino's sultry vocals pouring out poetic lyrics filled with imagery and set up against spooky pianos, haunting organs or subtle jazzy horns. The combo, along with some electronic loops, gives the music an other-worldly blues-jazz feel you'd hear in a lounge or in a Jim Jarmusch film." - New York Post

"... Advancing electronic beyond any simplistic notions that people may have... Mudville's muddy rhythms are topped with lush bass lines that provide a thick backdrop for Marilyn Carino's seductive vocals. Marilyn Carino and Benjamin Rubin make intelligent electronic that ranges from chilling and eerie to lamentful and moving. Their four song EP is a great introduction to the pair that leaves you wanting more. Lyrically, Carino is far ahead of the curve." - Urban Ambiance Journal

"Dreamy-tough words and cool breakbeats housing sultry combos of bob-and-weave beats and jazzmatazz - downright sexy. The songs imbed thoughts of personal longing and private spirit that leave you with visions of the attractive loner in a candy- striper smoke room. Marilyn Carino and Benjamin Rubin put together poetics and smoothly jarring electronics that are both challenging and soulful. Carino jumpstarts the brain with lyrical majestics that boggle - impressively - imparting a dimension sorely missing in recent music. Chilling phrases like "A blaze of women's tears into your open mouth like a waterbird" are much of the highlights - lushly escorted by Rubin's bluesy bass, Wurlitzer and clever beat manipulations." - AllMusic Guide

Mudville is the future-past, combining an ultra-modern electronic aesthetic with the classic sound of vintage vinyl. Think Curtis Mayfield's weighty grooves, P.J. Harvey's avant-blues passion, Fiona Apple's soaring, jazzy laments and the futurist soundscapes of Dan the Automator. Producer/bassist Ben Rubin skillfully combines fresh production (beats, samples, synths) with old-school instruments (double bass, Hammond B3 organ, whole orchestras) to create earthy, idiosyncratic music that spotlights songwriter/vocalist Marilyn Carino's keen prose and expansive wail. With "serious chops" (Time Out New York) and comparisons to Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone and Annie Lennox, Carino's strange, fearless voice plays muse to Rubin's unsettling yet compelling blend of churning rhythms and lush symphonic arrangements.

Captivating lyrics that compliment a subtle groove. Great for road-trips

smokey sultry sounds
Absolutely loved the cd. Vocals reminded me of Beth Gibbons and PJ Harvey all at the same time.

Best unheard disk I've picked up in a long time
I shamelessly admit I'm a Portishead & Tricky fan, and this albumn appealed to all the same sultry soft tastes. But Mudville has their own complex sound that is alluring in its own right. Carino might as well be singing in your ear, there's such a personal feel to the music. This disk is well worth trying.

Very cool, strange music
Mudville is stoner music for smart people. It's hypnotic, electronic/acoustic with great, heavy beats but without the boring, redundant quality of house. The lyrics and voice of singer Marilyn Carino are gorgeous and provocative. The songs are full of surprises and interesting accents that I get more out of with each listen. It reminds me sonically of Bjork and Radiohead but is totally unique. The only downside to this CD is that there's only four songs on it!
