Album Notes
Mike Atkins is an accomplished musician who has been singing and playing the piano and singing since the very young age of 5 years old, writing songs since age thirteen, and performing on stage for just as long. He describes his music as soulful piano/vocal driven Blues/Rock, and musical comfort food.
With his new release “Rivers” Mike wanted to return to and explore his roots, both musical and personal.
“I grew up listening to Ray Charles and Stax music, and cut my Blues teeth playing along with BB King records, Eric Clapton. Basically any Blues and Soul I could get my hands on.” He continues “I was learning Elton John and Billy Joel, but I gravitated helplessly toward Dr John and James Booker. I’d sit in with any band that would let me.”
In the early nineties Mike learned how to play B3 from Gospel artist Becky Fender, and it’s that kind of playing he feels he’s returned to on Rivers.

“For the last few years I got caught up chasing a radio sound. It didn’t pay off in any significant way, and I wasn’t really being myself. With this record I’m doing more of what I want, and I feel like it’s authentic. It’s the kind of record I would want to listen to.”
If you listen close enough you can hear The Staple Singers, and Otis Redding in the vocal and musical deliveries, as well as lesser known Soul artists like Mighty Sam McClain. Raw and emotional, just like good Soul music should be.
Though most of the album was recorded in Mike’s living room He was able to get a couple of New Braunfels musical staples on the song “Never Walk Alone” with Matt Briggs from The Zack Walther Band on drums, and the legendary DJ/guitar player Tom Gillam on slide guitar.
Rivers is also the first album Mike has ever pressed to vinyl, courtesy of Discmakers. He was also given a custom turntable by Crosley Record Manufacturers featuring the album art printed on the lid.
“I love old school LP records, and I was beyond excited when I was able to put it out on vinyl. I think anyone who comes to one of my shows who is a collector will be pleased to add this one to their bin.”
Mike has toured, performed, and recorded with several Artists including The Zach Walther Band, Phil Keaggy, Chonda Pierce, Becky Fender, Mary-Kathryn, and many more. Mike has also performed overseas.
You can also catch Mike live at Pete's Dueling Pianos in Austin, TX. as one of their regular headline players.
