ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Media Burn are bored with the current music scene, even most "alternative" rock. With their first album, DEFORMITY FOLLOWS DYSFUNCTION, the fledgling Kalamazoo Michigan-based band pretty much went crazy in the studio. Fascinated by organized chaos and structural innovation within the context of the pop songform, they were constantly experimenting with new musical ideas and generally trying to push the envelope. While the final versions of the album's 14 songs are a bit more polished and melodic than those initial recordings, much chaos still creeps through, in highly original ways. The album's dense intricacy lends itself well to repeat listenings.

Within all the din, singer Johanna Blanchard keeps the music grounded in reality, with an infectious voice and memorable lyrics expressing her feelings about the real world and relationships.

While there really is no band in the world that sounds quite like Media Burn, their biggest influences include Throwing Muses, My Bloody Valentine, early Public Image Ltd., the Velvet Underground, the Jesus & Mary Chain, and Eno's song albums.

very cool!
Media Burn has a truly unique sound for an American band. i really love this album. There's enough excellent songs on 'Deformity Follows Dysfunction' to fill 2 albums actually. None of the 14 songs could be called "filler". The songwriting is nearly flawless throughout. Standouts for me are the punky 'Familiarity Breeds Contempt', which has probably the wildest guitar riff i've ever heard; 'Just Once More', which for some reason reminds me a little of a Throwing Muses song; and the epic 'God of Wrath', which is brilliant in the way it builds in intensity with each passing minute. Many tracks on here remind me of Curve or one of the better bands from the late-80's/ early 90's British dreampop era. The production style, the songwriting style, the overall vibe, just screams "UK". It's like some really great long-lost offshoot of My Bloody Valentine or Lush. Hard to believe they are from Michigan. I wish there were more bands with their style.
