Album Notes
“Mary D. Williams has a deep humanity and a timeless voice that resonates in these songs. She changes lives-I have watched it happen and it has happened to me. Though the voice is uniquely her own, her music emerges from a chorus, born in the bondage of slavery, that still speaks to our struggle against what Martin Luther King, Jr. called the ‘thingification’ of human beings. Her power as a singer comes from her heart and from her faith in the God who drowned Pharaoh’s army and still seeks to let His people go; her faith in the blood that has signed all of our names.” Tim Tyson

“ The songs on this CD offer listeners one of the most profound and beautiful gifts imaginable; a glimpse into a world where the ideals of democracy and Christianity are something more than empty words. A world where people come together to share their burdens and their testimony to the powers that brought them through the storms in the world and in their souls. It’s a specifically African American story grounded in the collective suffering of slavery and Jim Crow, and ringing with the determination and triumphs of the Freedom Movement which began centuries ago and will continue until its vision has been achieved. But it’s a story that speaks to everyone with ears and an open heart. When you listen to Mary Williams, you’re hearing the voice of a great singer, but you’re also hearing the voices of the elders and the ancestors who signed their names in blood.” Craig Weiner

Blood Done Sign My Name
I was able to hear Mary sing at a workshop and she knocked my socks off! I enjoyed (still do) hearing the messages behind the songs everyone should hear and experience. Thank you!

Blood done sign My Name.
I read Blood Done Sign My Name and it mentioned this song. I moved from New Zealand to the West coast of the U.S.A. in 1966. I found it totally horrifying that I could live through this violence with so little impact on my own life. I was appalled at my calloused indiference to what was going on and how much suffering was endured by innocent people.
The book mentioned the song and I did not know it and wanted to hear it.
Thank you for your beautiful rendition. It was very healing to listen to the lyrics and music.

Daphne Burkhalter.
