Album Notes
Stepping outside his role as one of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers to front his own band, The Peter Mayer Group, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Mayer has been steadily building a fervent following across the country. "Musicbox" marks Mayer's 7th solo CD.

A cast of talented musicians appear on "Musicbox"; along with Peter Mayer Group members Jim Mayer, Roger Guth, R. Scott Bryan and Vince Varvel, are celebrated guest recording artists Mac McAnally, Jay Oliver, Chris Walters, Dave Weckl, and Coral Reefer vocalist Tina Gullickson.

Recording under the name PM, Mayer released his debut album for Warner Brothers Records in 1988. Working with Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Hornsby), this album produced the single "Piece of Paradise,"charting at eight on Billboard.

Mayer's "Musicbox" CD brings to life Mayer's 14 new original songs, including Faith in Angels, Last Island, Walking to the Sun, as well as the title track. This collection of tunes showcases Mayer's versatility and virtuosity, weaving finely honed lyrics and memorable melodies with influences from blues, country, folk, jazz, pop and rock into a compelling soundscape that reveals more with each listening.

Professional review:
Peter Mayer's "Musicbox" CD continues to mine the rich vein of great writing and playing that had already earned him the stature of being among the most played artists on Radio Margaritaville. Brilliant songs like The Last Island,Musicbox,Cool Blue Swing and Sweet Nothing, prove to Peter's faithful fans that his growth as an artist goes on and on. I continue to marvel at how great his music is, while those who have yet to see and hear him have no idea (yet) that this body of work even exists. Whether that changes sooner rather than later remains to be seen. What matters right now is that Peter Mayer's "Musicbox" will touch deeply both those who have been waiting patiently for it, and those who for whom it is an introduction to him and his music. Buy it immediately!

Truly a masterful songwriter! A must have cd!
If you like artists like Jars of Clay, Phil Colins, Matt Nathanson, Hootie and the Blowfish, Michael W Smith, John Mayer, or Norah Jones, then you will probably like this cd.

This seems like a more complete CD than some of his others I have heard (although still good). The songs are well crafted masterpieces with soothing melodies and wonderful vocals and musicianship. Mayer really shows off his songwriting expertise on this album in the way that he lays out all of his songs. He adds just the right amount of solos in the right places as well as changing it up by using different textures to create an ambience that keeps you interested and involved while never getting too repetitive. His songs range in variety from different tempos and keys, as well as utilizing a more variety of instraments than in the past such as a timbalie feature on "The Last Island" and a suttle e-bow on the guitar for a mysterious humming string type sound on "Jessie's Hill". He's also got his share of catchy chorus melodies with songs like "Sweet Nothing" and "Music box" that will get stuck in your head all day long.

All in all, I highly recommend this cd. If you have not tried Peter Mayer, this is a good one to start with. It's the 3rd cd of his that I own, and my favorite so far. Well worth the money!

Perhaps the best PM cd yet!
Combining the sincere storytelling and candid authenticity of previous CD's "Romeo's Garage" and "Spare Tire Orchestra" with a little more "grease" on the sound, in a good way. More lush orchestrations and arrangements, more background vocals and a bit more of a dreamy, ear candy quality to it sonically. But it still has the haunting, to-the-heart quality of PM's previous folk/pop records. His phenomenal guitar playing is featured a bit more than previous solo CD's as well, but still mysteriously understated compared to his virtuoso work as a sideman guitarist for other artists. This artist knows how to support the song with his playing and never oversteps what tells the story of the song for the cheap thrill of showing what he can play. PM is possibly one of the most unique musicians I've ever seen- having the vocal precision and quality of a Richard Page or a Sting, and simultaneously writing like the best songwriters- the ultimate "singer/songwriter". But it doesn't stop there- he is also an instrumentalist of the higher calibre- even the best "singer/songwriters" hire studio musicians to play most of the guitars on their records- but he IS one of those hired guns that would typically come in and put the magic on the tracks for another artist. Simply the highest level of musical mastery- and this record is such a joy to behold.

Why is this guy 'unknown?
Great player, great writer, great singer. So, of course, he doesn't get air-play. Go figure.
I'll be buying more of this guy.

Peter Mayer's Musicbox
Once again Peter Mayer has created a wonderful collection of songs displaying his great musicianship and mastery of many musical styles all woven together with his with his silky vocals. If you like the works of James Taylor, Norah Jones, Paul Simon or Sting, you'll love this album. You'll also enjoy Peter Mayer's "Spare Tire Orchestra" & "Romeo's Garage". How it is that more people haven't discovered this artist remains a mystery to me. Listen and pass him on.
