Album Notes
Matt Ouimet's first album, Silently, is a collection of songs that transcend genre. His open, heartfelt lyrics coupled with lush, dreamy melodies make for memorable music that lingers in the air like a lullaby.

There are no gimmicks in these songs; they are harmonic vehicles built on honesty, combining country style, pop arrangements and jazz progressions. Matt will use complex instrumentation or bare simplicity to serve the emotion and groove of the moment.

It's hard to believe just one man is making all that music, but on Silently Matt plays every instrument and sings every vocal. The sound is so smooth and organic, so natural and intimate, you feel like you're listening to a band that has been together for fifty years.

Born in Morden, Manitoba in 1981, Matt's family moved to Ottawa in 1988 where he took up drums in a grade six music class. He was (and still is) a quick study and was playing bars by the age of 14 with musicians twice (often five times) his age.

At 27, Matt's musical ability extends to guitar, bass, keyboards and just about anything else that makes a noise. He knows his place in the music, no matter what instrument he's playing. You will find yourself seduced by music that is deceptively simple until you try to figure it all out.

On Silently, Matt has crafted ten pop masterpieces, without a note or a word out of place, and the production nears perfection. Relax and clear your next hour, because you'll want to take the time to enjoy the sonic marvel of Silently.

Peters at CD Baby

If you like the sunnier side of Pedro the Lion and M. Ward, with a hint of Wilco and Elvis Costello, then check out this album. Melancholy vocals singing fairly hopeful songs with standout arrangements help make this album a good listen. Matt Ouimet has a history as a drummer, and as a recorder and producer for other bands, and his history with production comes through here. The album is centered around folky indie pop with sharp hooks abounding. An occasional piano or tambourine lines, crossed with unexpected rhythmic change-ups songs like "Dream" moving, while the sparse electric guitar strums, snare drum accents and 92 second song time keep "Deadline" beguiling. "Canoe" has a lush, dreamy, Daniel Lanois-meets-Brian Wilson gauze and wins the prize for loveliest song on the album. To top it off, the mix on the album as a whole just sounds top notch; strap on some headphones and listen hard, you'll be glad you did.
