ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I listen to all styles of jazz, and my compositions all have a different flavor to them. My classical piano teacher likes to say that I hear "the whole picture," and I try to share that in my arrangements of these songs. My original composition "Matt's Blues" shows my love for the big band, while "Neighborhood Park" and "Song for Allie," which was written for my sister Allison, reflect the traditional trio influence. "Flow" and "Until Next Time" represent my desire to compose songs in the smooth jazz style. "Take a Break" is my journey into the funky side of jazz, while my arrangement of "Mas Que Nada" touches on my Latin roots. My arrangements of "Back Track" and "Pistachio," played on my favorite instrument, the Hammond B3 organ, honor two of my mentors, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Ms. Rhoda Scott. "I Thought About You" demonstrates my interest in the art of accompanying a vocalist. My hope is that anyone who listens to my music will hear a young artist who shows versatility in what he plays and creates. Thank you for purchasing my new album and for your support. - Matthew Whitaker

"Matthew Whitaker is music. To see and hear him play is to know that divine talent exists.  Beyond his innate musical abilities is a sheer joy and passion to create music.  You can expect great things on the horizon from this remarkable and lovable young musician." - Monifa Brown, WBGO-FM
