What the critics are saying about Lyn Stanley's work--"...major credit must go to Ms Stanley's radiant vocal artistry. Her flawless intonation and sumptuous warmth combine with a full bodied resonance whether in the darkest deep tones a la Sarah Vaughan or the penetrating register where Dinah Washington lived. Her lyrics - precisely enunciated, perfectly phrased and vividly rhythmic - tell her stories not only through the words, but in the emotional content with which she sings them."-Grady Harp

"Jazz singer par excellence Lyn Stanley never ceases to amaze.."- Don Grigware, Broadway World critic.

" Lyn Stanley establishes herself as a fine interpreter of lyric gold and platinum melody. A champion ballroom dancer, Stanley has an inviting alto voice, great rhythmic nuance, and an obvious respect for the vaunted material she covers."-Nicholas F. Mondello, All About Jazz

Stanley continues to utilize her creative instincts in presenting an incredible new version of a holiday standard, Little Drummer Boy, through a simple, beautiful expression of the available instruments at the time of this story--a harp, a drum and a beautiful voice to carry the message of true giving associated with the season.

Christopher Vincent

A Festive Classic lovingly rendered by Lyn Stanley
The Little Drummer Boy finds its origins located back in 1941 where it was formally known as ‘Carol of the Drum’ written by Katherine Kennicott Davis, an American classical music composer & teacher who was interested in producing material for amateur and girls' choirs. It was not until 1958 where it was popularized by the Harry Simeone Chorale and proved so favoured as a Christmas song that over the following decades it has seen many unique renderings by many artists in the vast world of musical entertainment. So, it should come as no surprise when the jazz sensation that is Lyn Stanley took up the mantel together with Steve Rawlins to produce their take on this original Christmas classic.

The performance that has been carefully choreographed in this ensemble features nothing more than Lyn’s silky lush sultry vocals eloquently accompanied simply yet wonderfully by rumba rhythmic drums and a beautifully gentile harp which gorgeously marry in accord to tell the story of the Little Drummer Boy. You may well therefore think there is not much more to this rendition but you would be greatly mistaken. Lyn’s unique romantic jazz style runs true to form throughout but there is an unmistakable passion, a connection that you can clearly hear through Lyn’s melodious timbre. Lyn has the unique ability to temper her tone and phrasing much in the same way a tenor sax would be handled during a solo, holding, no, demanding your attention but in the politest & most civil manor – such a talent one cannot help admire and at times find deeply mesmerising. The drums accompaniment play instantly with a smooth gusto setting the pace and style that instantly grasp your attention introducing you to the lady behind the legendary dreamy jazz voice who portrays this song with such verve throughout you hang on to each and every syllable beautifully serenaded by Lyn. The stylish sophisticated use of the harp passionately played by Carol Robbins adds a magical quality, almost an ethereal element bringing a touch of magic to this enchanted rendering that helps elevate this production heads and shoulders above the rest.

Not forgetting the production side, the mixing and mastering of this track I am pleased to report does not suffer from what I often refer to as poor recording syndrome. Both Lyn & Steve consistently focuses on providing the highest-quality production with Lyn being one of those rare individuals whose comprehensive knowledge of the technical medium is matched by her sense of cadence, phrasing, and pathos. No instrument nor Lyn’s voice have been artificially enhanced. There is a richness, a liveness, a realness to the sound, everything is natural and pure, expansive and real. Great care has been taken to capture every last nuance of detail making this track a pleasure to listen to and appreciate for its wholesome content.

This version of Little Drummer Boy did indeed capture my attention and has forever wound its way into my heart for every Festive season to come. For that reason, together with the pleasurable overall presentation I cannot recommend this rendering of Little Drummer Boy highly enough. Thank you, Lyn and Steve for such a delightful gift of festive musical charm.
