Album Notes

TERRY WARD Young & Restless Sun Sentinel

"During my first visit to Hawaii last month, I was stoked by how easy it was to get past the stereotypical tourism industry images of lagoon pools, swaying palms and pineapple-garnished mai tais .

Just north of the town of Lihue,on Kauai , where planes roar in from Los Angeles and Honolulu and the island's ubiquitous helicopter tours lift skyward like spiders up a silk-spun strand, I did something quite out of character.

I picked up a hitchhiker.

I think it was the contagious if cliched aloha spirit mixed with empathy for a fellow traveler. A sun-bleached ponytail, purple backpack and wiry frame bounded toward my rental car.

Lani Lowell is a psychotherapist-turned-screenwriter. As it turned out, I had joined a distinguished line of lift-givers, which included the drummer for the Grateful Dead, Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash, and Young, a NASA physicist, Chinese honeymooners and a Tibetan Buddhist monk from Mongolia via Russia who'd been touring the island by motorbike, "traveling," according to Lani, "from soul to soul, not place to place."

Originally from Brooklyn, she'd been hitchhiking the islands for 10 years. "Ninety percent of my social network on Kauai has been made through hitching," Lani said. "Every time I have a question, the universe pops up with an answer in a new car."
