about Abel Korzeniowski:

Born on the 18th of July, 1972, in Cracow, Poland. In 1996 graduated the instrumental studies (specialisation: cello), and then in 2000 graduated with merit from the composition class of Krzysztof Penderecki at the Music Academy in Cracow. At the same Academy, in the years 1999-2000, he was an assistant at the Department of Composition, Conducting and Musical Theory.
His compositions were performed at the most important festivals in Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Moldavia, Ukraine and Belarus. He also composed music for numerous drama plays and films - features, documentaries and shorts.

In 1998 he received the Creative Scholarship of the President of Cracow in the category of music composition. Two years later, at the 25th Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia he received the Golden Lions - individual award for the musical score to the film "Big Animal".
In 2001 he was nominated by "Film" monthly to their Golden Duck award for extraordinary achievement in film music. At the same time "Cinema" monthly included him on their list of top Polish film music composers. Also in 2001 his symphonic composition Hypnosis had its premiere in Berlin (the orchestra was Sinfonietta Cracovia, conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki), which was broadcast live by Deutsche Radio.

In 2002 he received Ludwik award (a theatre award from the city of Cracow) for the score to "Kafka", and also Jancio Wodnik award at Prowincjonalia Film Festival, for his score for the feature film "An Angel in Cracow". According to "Kino" monthly, his music for the controversial documentary "Evolution" (the film was awarded the prestigous Golden Gate Award at the 45th Film Festival in San Francisco) was an achievement of an entirely original kind.
In 2004 he created a new score for Fritz Lang's "Metropolis". A monumental 147-minute composition for an 90-piece orchestra, 60 choir and 2 solo voices ambitiously re-interprets the silent movie from 1926.

graceful and delicate soundtrack to a movie i've never seen...
I've really been enjoying Abel Korzeniowski's soundtrack pieces that accompany "An Angel in Cracow." I say "pieces" because the individual "studies" that make up the whole borrow tastefully from the universe of "classical" (ie "non-pop/folk/jazz") musics from the late 18th C to the late 20th. The pieces stand up very well on their own, and, indeed, seem much more "discrete" entities than the themes/motifs and variations that most soundtracks employ. For a possible , more familiar reference point, Korzeniowki's music reminded all of us in our household of the Oscar winning soundtrack for "Finding Neverland" written later, by another Polish composer. Anyway, I liked it a lot..the styles employed range from an Adams like minimalism to early classical..so there's something for just about anyone.

Korzeniowski's score for the film, "An Angel in Cracow" stands alone as a body of work with exceptional, evocative beauty. With lulling, hypnotic repetition, he captures exquisite atmospheres and tapestries of tenderness, loneliness and quiet but intense yearning. The award-winning composer and student of Penderecki has a remarkably subtle touch that seems to speak of magical unfoldings, a voice that comes from the hushed places in the heart which need the most attention. Even without ever seeing the film, this soundtrack is easy to appreciate and savor.

Real music, not just film music
It's film music, but of a high-quality stand-alone kind. I think it's more a case of a film story being a creative catalyst to a serious composer, than it is of setting music to images. The music is performed by a small un-named orchestra (I'm guessing the musicians might be drawn from Sinfonietta Cracovia), who play with considerble sensitivity and finesse. The first seven tracks sound like a single piece of modern music. I don't have the reference points for modern classical music, but 'minimalist romantic' might be close. Tracks eight and nine are the first indications that you are listening to film music, when a short bossa nova piece is followed by a lilting guitar tune that has its roots in dusty American roads and includes a discretely plaintive steel guitar. A formal Haydn-like piece then takes you back to a reprise of the enchanted moods of the opening track. All in all, a lovely wistful piece that sounds entirely in keeping with the prospect of a modern angel in Kraków. The one downside is that it only lasts for thirty-four minutes. I could have done with the ones and zeros filling the whole surface of the disc. I've found myself putting it on 'repeat' to make up the shortfall.
