ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
75 years ago, a musical icon was born – the incomparable Joni Mitchell. When I began listening to her music as a child, I was immediately struck by how Joni could capture my very thoughts and feelings, articulating them in such a resonant, poignant way. Joni’s music has been like my dearest friend, my secret keeper, a lifelong soulmate and companion through all my loves, losses, joys, and tears.

No matter what I do or where I go, I will always treasure the prairies, and my prairie kinship with Joni Mitchell. I have tried to capture a sense of space and place, a sonic tribute to the lush landscapes, sweeping golden fields, vast valleys, and jewel-toned lakes that we hail from. After countless hours of arranging, composing, rehearsing, and creating in the studio, I have finally recorded my versions of several of Joni Mitchell’s songs alongside my original compositions. This album has been a pure labour of love, fueled by my passion to do Joni’s songs justice, and my desire to share my unique musical voice and express my own stories. Here I pay homage not only to Joni, but to the prairies and the many powerful women who have shaped, supported, and inspired me along my own journey. Thank you, Joni, for the gift of endless inspiration.

I am extremely grateful to the many wonderful people who contributed to this project. Thank you very much to:

Paul Johnston. MacEwan University. Bent River Records. Chris Andrew. Brett Hansen. Joel Jeschke. Rubim de Toledo. Christopher Pennington. Mallory Chipman. Christine Hanson. Joseph Semple. Audrey Ochoa. Terry Tran & Danny Johnston (The Audio Department). Heaven, Liam, and Philip (MacEwan University Recording Program). The Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Tatiana Zagorac (XYZ Productions). Guy Hebert (Karisma Mastering). Raine Radtke. Jill Chipman.

In addition, I would like to thank my parents, Ron and Kim, my brother, Joel, and my partner, Kyle, for your amazing love and support during this process. Thank you to my family and friends in Regina, “the cult”, for always believing in me and my creativity. Thank you to my late grandfather, Doug Brunskill, for generously helping me to fund my dream project. Thank you to my friends near and far for being so kind, enthusiastic, and supportive of my pursuit of this goal.

Kate Blechinger is an inventive and charismatic Edmonton based vocalist, composer, and arranger. Originally hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, Kate takes direct influence from the vast prairie landscapes of her youth to create expansive, evocative compositions and arrangements for listeners to enjoy. Her stories are laden with imagery, and imbued with a reflective sense reminiscent of iconic singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Kate’s “jazz” is the musical equivalent of an artist’s palette, and is definitely a hybrid of sorts; she pairs the harmony, instrumentation and improvisation of more traditional jazz forms with the lyricism of modern jazz and folk genres. What results is a music that is personal, poetic, and playful – and one that involves audiences in a truly eclectic musical journey.

Over the past year, Kate was fortunate enough to have received an Individual Artist Project grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and has embarked on recording her debut album, Under a Dancing Sky. Under a Dancing Sky was recorded, mixed and produced by Juno Award winning engineer, Paul Johnston, and features innovative folk-jazz arrangements of Joni Mitchell’s compositions alongside several of Kate’s original songs. This collection of songs is a tribute not only to Joni Mitchell, who celebrates her 75th Birthday this November, but also to Kate’s experiences growing up on the prairies.
