Album Notes
Listen to the plaintive cry of a steam train’s whistle, the moan of the lonesome prairie wind, red-winged blackbird’s reverie and the cottonwood country’s courting song. Montana singer/songwriter, Jim Schulz, paints unforgettable sound pictures of “the West.” The recording is a collection of original Montana inspired tunes that conjure up images rich in the physical, historical and spiritual beauty of his western homeland. Schulz, a fourth generation Montanan, has roots that go deep into the region. It is this solid connection to a sense of place that vividly permeates his music. He sings about what he knows— a land where prairie meets mountains and mountains meet sky.
Fiddle, guitar, banjo, hammered dulcimer, musical saw and Native American courting flute are all featured in this celebration of new western folk music. His tunes have been heard on numerous nationally syndicated public radio programs including Mountain Stage, The Folk Sampler, E-Town and New River City Folk.
Schulz grew up in Drummond, Montana, a small cowtown that billed itself as “the bullshipping capital of the world.” Such a rural setting allowed a young kid plenty of elbow room in which to roam. Jim realized at an early age how one’s life and actions are intimately tied to the land. This awareness of his surroundings has been a constant inspiration for his music.
Jim is no stranger to performing, having played and sang from Mexico to Canada for many years. Schulz makes his living as a public school teacher where he currently instructs biology and earth science at Helena High School.

This simply but beautifully recorded cd is reminiscent of the best work of John Denver during his "Rocky Mountain High" period only much less commercial. It abounds with gorgeous guitar fingerpicking, compelling vocals, and innovative instrumental arrangements.

Dirty Linen

Schulz's songs add up to a highly enjoyable portrait of Way Out West.
The arrangements are complex and lovely. Schulz's warm, sensitive tenor voice and precise guitar work is an understated foundation for impeccably performed music that celebrates the open country of Montana.

This collection of nine compositions celebrating the grandeur of Montana and its culture, complete with woodcut cover artwork by Schulz himself, is the most beautiful cd package of the season.

Victory Review

A wonderful cd! Schulz is an excellent singer and consummate guitarist.
Schulz's songs capture the feel of Montana perfectly, including the loneliness and desolation as well as the beauty.

Evocative! This recording leads the listener into another time.
Where the Red-winged Blackbirds Sing carries its emotional impact in its solid, powerful lyrics that set the stage then lead the listener into another time. It's not just a nostalgic look back at the "good old days" but honors all of the past. The sound is natural, evocative, and, by the way, flawless. The list goes on and on. This cd does not play like a series of snapshots. Instead, it unfolds as through the eye of a movie camera. The listener gets the picture!

The landscapes, the wild things, the people of Montana, and images of the West..
These songs reach out for your attention and then dig deep into your psyche. The melodies are the type you find yourself humming along with and the lyrics paint pictures and tell stories that captivate.
