Great introduction to jibaro music for the uninitiated.
The Anglo ear untrained in music of the jibaro (Puerto Rican farm hand) might find it overly simple and hard to listen to. But this CD is one of the best Christmas collections I've heard since Ramito's popular Parrandas Navidenas of a generation ago. The addition of Latin piano and occasional background brass is unobtrusive and therefore doesn't detract from the authenticity of these selections. Of special note are the songs, Un Padre Bueno y Sagrado (a good and sacred father), sung and played in the style so common to the mountain music and simple poetry of the troubador, to the innovative Parriando con Santa Claus, in which St. Nick himself joins in the Yuletide fun. (Before Puerto Ricans came to this country, they knew nothing of Santa Claus, because their gift-giving holiday was Three Kings Day on January 6.) In short, this CD is a great introduction to Christmas jibaro music for the untrained Anglo ear.
