Waiting For The Tiller

by Hollydrift

Over 70 minutes of serene, ambient washes that morph into mind-altering chaos and back again... Hollydrift uses found sound and technology, married to all sorts of antiquated communication devices, to create thick, rich sound collages.

Album Notes
Hollydrift's 3rd full-length CD, "Waiting for the Tiller", continues to build on the solid foundation laid by previous releases "In These Days of Merriment" and "This Way to Escape." The new release features over 70 minutes of sound that streams in from the outer edges of our galaxy and bubbles up from deep within the earth. The recipe often calls for taking antiquated communication devices, marrying them to their modern electronic counterparts, and tossing them all into a musical melange that becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Hollydrift's sound art appeals to fans of dark ambient, space music, noise, musique concrete, field recording and even more traditional styles of electronic music. Anderson manages to do this without the predictable pounding, screaming or screeching that has become much too common within the currently expanding ocean of "experimental" and "noise" artists. The result is a Janusian portrait: a fleeting glance at days gone by alongside a glimpse into an uncertain future. It is the soundtrack to a journey both beautiful and terrifying, and one that we cannot escape.

... the best sound collage artist I've yet to encounter.
I'm not an expert on experimental audio, but I've listened to a fair amount and thus far Hollydrift (Mathias Anderson) is by far the best sound collage artist I've yet to encounter. One stunning thing about the audio compositions Hollydrift constructs is the artist's ability to take
something that is non-musical, traditionally speaking, like static, and convert it mysteriously into a lush and soothing ambient texture. It's still static, but it's mesmerizing. Of course, his art goes beyond mere static. You will also encounter crickets, found audio (which makes for interesting narrative, even though the voice out of context has little concrete meaning), ambient tones, beeps and more.

It's just as compelling as many more conventional musical compositions, but is more challenging. The otherworldly quality of Hollydrift's work enables the listener to enjoy the same kind of spacey drift-off available in ambient and new age music, but in a far different way .... highly recommended.

Beauty and Pain

Bizarre Experimental Audio Theater...
I've very much been looking forward to this CD, as the material on the 4 way split was my favorite by the same label. Very, very odd... drones and telephone and fax rings with random people being cut up talking on the phone. Its very unnerving to say the least and just want I would want from this amazing project. Bizarre Experimental Audio Theater is what's going on here. There are truly not words on how brilliant this release truly is. It's going to take months for this CD to fully sink into my mind and to understand all of its layers and meanings. I'm just as awe struck the 2nd time around my friends. I still don't know where Hollydrift came from or how or what they are, all i know is there will be a request for an interview to try and help the world get more access and press to one of the top 10 bands of 2004 for me. I want close my eyes and just forget this world and be lost in the world that Hollydrift creates and with one listen you will fully understand. So with this get the CD's and write the label and band and get this project known the world over. I'm doing my part now you do yours... (Clint)
