Album Notes
"Noise pop at its finest."

"A leading exponent of San Francisco's prog rock renaissance is Griddle. Last week's show at the Voodoo had the boys playing the varnish off of their instruments -- fists were pumping, sweat was flying, and everyone at the bar was singing along. This isn't like old-fashioned prog. No falsetto tales of orcs and snow-dogs and dryads -- the voices are meatier and throatier, and the wood nymphs are replaced with evil bosses, futons, and Humphrey Bogart."

"Loops and samples bouncing off the ceiling. Atmospheric swells growing in, out, and over to the back of the room. Jagged guitar lines slicing the speaker cones. Raging torrents of Jamersonian bass knocking over tables. Toms of Bonham. And throngs of onlookers bobbing in the liquid sweep, reaching for wall hangings to establish a mooring, gasping for breath."

"Griddle plays the kind of melodies that are difficult to predict, but once they unfold, they seem inevitable -- like radio hits that you never heard at the time. They get stuck in your head like taffy, but you don't really mind."

"The early Who comes to mind when I hear Griddle. It's a train that is constantly accelerating, almost going off the track. Scrappy, beery, and fun as all hell."

"Griddle bangs out frenetic little gems with the urgency of the Minutemen and the loopy sense of Camper Van Beethoven... remember that Steely Dan cover from Double Nickles on the Dime? So does Griddle."

y r they not on the radio?
This album is full of catchy songs and no disposable melodies as they suggest radio is full of nowadays (true). Griddle is due to unseat radio pop bands that suck (hooasstunk, badcathy, etc.)with songwriting worthy of the great rock acts of the 70's. Let the revolution begin.

Better than "prog pop"...just a great rock record!
Griddle are a phenominally talented band. They take the basic mode of the pop song and stretch it to new boundaries...with unique arrangements, complex instrumentation, and tight musicianship. I highly recommend this CD. If you're tired of the same old brand of power pop, 'Beak' will put a smirk on your face.
