Album Notes
This is an album of songs from 'Accidental Nostalgia (an operetta about the pros and cons of amnesia)' which was written and composed by Cynthia Hopkins, designed by Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg, directed by DJ Mendel, and choreographed by Jordana Che Toback. It is performed live by Hopkins, Findlay, Sugg and the band Gloria Deluxe, and has been presented by St. Ann's Warhouse, On the Boards, and the Walker Art Center, with more presentations to come. The creation of this piece was supported by AS220 in Providence, Rhode Island; NEST rehearsal space in DUMBO, Brooklyn; the Whitney at Altria; MASS MoCA; the Perishable Theater in Providence, RI; and St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY; and funded in part by generous grants from the LEF Foundation of New England and a Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Award. It was also supported by artistic and financial donations from numerous individuals. Please go to http://www.gloriadeluxe.com for more information.

Tamara Turner, CD Baby

Sporting a haunting voice like Aimee Curl of ThaMuseMeant, Gloria Deluxe hones in on a smoky troubadour hiss with a carnival twist. Creeping from dark country noir to wasted, whiskey-toned folk complete with crying fiddle, supported by trombones sliding in for comment, "Accidental Nostalgia" leads you through sad and gorgeous little heartache songs. There are fluttering images of a deserted mining town set against a backdrop of golden rolling hills to the local dive bar with its wafting cigar smoke. Delightfully eccentric and quirky, this is an album that you won't soon forget.

OK but better to come.
I bought this CD after seeing Ms. Hopkins and her band perform the second installment of her Accidental Nostalgia trilogy, "Must don't whip um," at Walker Art Center this month. While I enjoy this CD, I miss the variety of rhythms and tempos that are used in the newer work and look forward to the release of that music on CD. But I would recommend this first installment to anyone who has an interest in Ms. Hopkins' work.
