Album Notes
The members of Gift Horse all subscribe to the belief that if it can't be done with two guitars, a bass and drums, then it probably ain't worth doing. The interplay between the band's two guitarists, Ross Manteufel and John Harland, is the key to the Gift Horse sound. Together these two lads have created some great guitar sounds on these recordings, a sonic landscape of chiming, crunching guitars. There are no guitar histrionics here, folks, just shimmering lines delivered with taste. The rhythm section, courtesy of Tim Kelly on bass and Paul Burke on drums, provides the requisite groove and gravity that keep the whole thing rolling and on track. But while the instrumentation is often jaw-droppingly good, it is the song that makes Gift Horse worthwhile. And what songs they are; wry observations of Brisbane backstreets sit snuggly with tales of personal struggle. There's much more than cars and girls going on between these lines and it's all conveyed through punchy melodies that keep playing in your head long after the final chord fades away.

All This Time GIFT HORSE
Check out this Australian Power Pop bands EP All This Time. It seems Aussie bands still love Power Pop, and are plugging away at it still. They indeed do sound to be influenced by Fountains Of Wayne & Cotton Mather to a degree, as indicated on their artist page, but I think they follow a long tradition of other Power Pop bands from Australia. Loved the lyrical references to The Jam Albums in the lead track, and the vague Church vibe of "Two Words." "Chequered Flag" has a Fab Four/Teenage Fanclub vibe, and I loved the harmonies and guitar outro of the last track. An enjoyable listen, hope to hear more of them soon.
