ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
When Gemma sat down to play her own interpretation of Winky D’s Musarova Bigman at the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards in London 2016 little did she know that would be her breakthrough moment and the beginning of a music career, that has not only seen her give us some more lovely renditions, but introduced us to the even more exquisite Gemma Griffiths catalogue. For her it was a performance that was just meant give the Zimbabwean Diaspora a taste of home with a twist, but destiny had a different idea and with the video of her at the awards going viral Zimbabweans all over the world were introduced to a new star, a gem had been unearthed. It was an overnight success, with over 100,000 YouTube views within months of its release, becoming something of an anthem for Zimbabweans across the globe.

Whilst Gemma has been a professional soul musician for little over two years now, her life from her childhood days has been characterized and defined by music; it’s literally who she is. Born in Cape Town and raised in Zimbabwe, Gemma attended Bishopslea junior school and Chisipite Senior School, where she was not only heavily involved in the music department but Head of Music department in Upper 6. With so much musical influence in her life at such an early age her career path was as good as set in stone and true to that on completion of her Advanced Level studies Gemma proceeded to Snow College in the United States where she pursued her music studies.
Now a Singer/Songwriter/Composer Gemma is embracing the journey that has so far seen her share the stage with Ammara Brown, Jah Prayza, Mattew Mole, Majozi and Jimmy Nevis. Gemma movd to Cape Town to kick start her career with appearances at local shows and festivals. During this same period she was back and forth between the United Kingdom as she began to attract the attention of music lovers with performances at Miombo magic, Zimfest in London as well as the local Shoko Festival where she has become a regular feature. It was also during her UK trips that she also got appearances on some of the most sought after channels the Mahogany Sessions, and SoFar Sounds.
Turn the page to 2017 Gemma has already made significant strides in her musical journey never mind it’s only a year since her massive breakthrough she has already shared the stage with some of the most beautiful voices under the sun. In 2017 she performed as part of Grammy Award winning artist Joss Stone’s World Tour in Zimbabwe. She has also shared the stage with Ammara Brown, and the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi, an experience that she describes as the highlight of her career so far.
The singer-songwriter has performed in a variety of music and arts festivals in Zimbabwe, including Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA), Unplugged, Shoko and Miombo Magic. She headlined for Zimfest London 2015 as well as the African Women’s Awards 2015.
Since then she has performed at the Cape Town Jazz Festival ‘young legends’ event and several times abroad, from London, to Edinburgh, to Kenya and beyond. Whilst travelling for her art has become an integral part of Gemma’s life, she spends most of her time jetting from Cape Town to Zimbabwe, and is very involved in the Zimbabwean music scene, evident in her nomination for a Zimbabwe Achievers Award for “Music Artist of the Year” 2016.
