Album Notes
UK singer-songwriter John Garrison releases his debut solo album after a 5 years career fronting UK band Budapest.

Crossing the format barriers of indie rock and adult alternative, "Above The Cosmos" is testimony to Garrison finding a fresh new sound he can call his very own, not least for his wide range of musical influences, from Talk Talk and Ennio Morricone to Prince and Francis Dunnery. Recorded in New York, "Above The Cosmos" was written and produced entirely by Garrison; mixed by up and coming engineer Matt Shane (Dashboard Confessional, Rosanne Cash); and mastered by Fred Kevorkian of White Stripes, Ryan Adams, Dave Matthews fame. "Above The Cosmos" was released independently in August and has since been added to rotation at over 150 college and public radio stations across the US and Canada.

Born and raised in the UK, John Garrison was writing songs and performing on stage from the age of 3. Master of the piano, guitar, bass and drums, Garrison traveled the world as a session player with international touring bands, before starting his own band Budapest in 1999. With Budapest, Garrison toured Europe for many years, amassing a loyal following in the UK and Spain, headlined Benicassim, one of Europe’s biggest festivals, appeared in and wrote music for BBC 1 drama "Final Demand", and recorded 2 highly acclaimed albums, with releases in the UK, Spain, and a major label release via Republic/Universal Records in the US.

“Whether he’s singing about disappointment, monotony, frustration, heartache or pain, one thing is for certain: John Garrison covers the anguish with enough delicate layers of strings, keys, percussion, guitars and pristine vocals to make it hard to believe that grief could ever exist alongside the splendor.” – CMJ US

“Above The Cosmos is a superb album, capturing as it does the essence of a songwriter fully in control of his artistic domain. Occasionally melancholic, occasionally introspective, but always charming and delivered with vocal and musical perfection.” - Coventry Telegraph UK

Class Act, Great Arrangements, Strong Songs
The Leamingtonian has come a long way since, dis-banding, Budapest, which in itself was a shame. Let's hope both albums will be easy to buy still (hint CD-Baby). John's vocals definitely have reached a new level, no more so than on 'Testimony', an anthem ready to be unleashed upon the world. Yet he can be poppy to with the uptempo ‘Carousel’ or 'Convincing Myself'. Yet if you want proof, this guy is going places, then listen to 'Walking On Broadway', a mature songwriter. Maybe in years to come, people will remember this with fond memories.

Totally recommended

Must have!
Seriously, best album of 2007. John Garrison is a well-kept secret - after you hear his songs you'll be wondering how is that possible. This album never disappoins, Garrison's songwriting is solid but not monotonous, beautiful but not cheesy. It's touching. If you like good songs then you will become a fan from track one.

The Cosmos
It is hard to find an album out of cliche and typical chords, lyrics, sound and all that we are used to listen everyday on the radios. Above The Cosmos is a little brightness in the middle of the dark monotony of today's music. This album shows different places, with different faces, different lifes... The more you listen to it, the more you will love it. It goes from love to hate, from happiness to pain, with a bit of the sort of melancholy that everyone loves to feel.

The best album I have bought in ages.

What a great find! I'd never heard of Budapest and John Garrison until I stumbled across some reviews for another band and I'm so glad I did. This is a brilliant album, please do more!

So Moving, So Honest
'Above the Cosmos' is... different. It approaches slowly before revealing its true intensity and deepness, its honesty, open sincerity and power. The emotions it delivers show a huge variety - from hope to fear and from despair to confidence, so clear and straightforward once it has caught you, it won't ever let you go again.
The lyrics are a precious piece of art accompanied by intriguingly addicting tunes and the sometimes heart-breaking and melancholic, sometimes hopeful and exhilarant, but always astonishingly emotional and touching voice of John Garrison who has created this gem of a CD everyone should have a listen to.
It's absolutely worth it.

Above the Cosmos
Absolutely brilliant! With a song like 'Walking on Broadway' John Garrison knows how to set down a good sphere. The cd makes you want to sit at the bar, feel comfortable and have a drink while talking to friends and listening to some good music. His intensity, his voice, his music, it all fits. Listening to his music just makes you want to hear more...

Outright Superior
'Above the Cosmos' is a truly remarkable piece of work - artistically brilliant and original from start to end. 12 tracks, excellently arranged and emotionally intoxicating, easy on the ears yet anything but mainstream. It's a well-ballanced mix of melancholy and hope, fragility and power. There is something pretty intense about John Garrison's stunning vocals and intriguing lyrics, so I just can't stop listening to this album. My favourites: 'Happy Hour' and 'Abdicate'.
