ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Caleb Willitz and Greg Ward are proud to announce the release of their debut-recording project, Gaps & Spaces: Synoptic Optiks. This recording is an electro-acoustic experimental exploration of one simple theme forged into four texturally rich and extremely soulful compositions. Willitz, a singer, songwriter, producer, and recording engineer, and Ward, a saxophonist, composer, and producer, gathered an amazing group of musicians to contribute to Synoptic Optiks, including guitarist, Jeff Parker (Tortoise), cellist, Fred Lonberg-Holm (Lightbox Orchestra), and guitarist, Dave Miller (Algernon).

The Process for the Synoptic Optiks project was as follows: First, we presented each musician with a musical theme, which was composed by Ward. Second, we captured their many performance takes of that theme with each take becoming more and more sonically adventurous. Third, Willitz harvested some of the greatest moments from each recording session as his source material for the four compositions on the album. Finally, Ward composed new music to accompany the last track on the album, Oration, which features violinist and violist, Dominic Johnson (New Millennium Orchestra), Makaya McCraven (In The Moment), and Ward on alto sax.

In addition to the album release, Willitz and Ward have commissioned an animation from Shannon Wallack and Jak Ritger entitled Brixel. The album is available on vinyl and digital formats.
