ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
If you've ever heard Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Sit With the Guru", then you might understand what happens when an eclectic singer/songwriter goes through a break-up in California, travels to India, takes a couple of years off from the world, moves to Florida, gets a day job, advertises for musicians and meets a keyboard wizard into electro-pop (producer David Salih) who agrees to a collaboration.

If this doesn't make any sense, then you're just in time to enjoy the adventures of Season of the Soul...songs that will take you through a variety of moods and hopefully leave you in a better place.

Gail Warning, singer/songwriter for the L.A. New Wave band she formed in 1978, little Itch, was discovered by Bert Sommer (from the original cast of Hair and a Woodstock performer) in the college town of Brockport, N.Y. while performing in a cover tune band, Clean Sheets. She has written, recorded, and performed with many noteworthy musicians, including Michael Brown from the Left Banke, Michael Steele from the Bangles, and blues musician, Carlos Guitarlos. As the featured artist for the Tamalyn Dallal (world renowned bellydancer, teacher, and writer) production of "Apathy and Passion" in Miami's Spanish Monastery, she performed original songs in Spanish and English.

So far, fans of Season of the Soul have included a movement therapist who played these songs for exercise classes in a pain clinic, bellydance performers, yoga teachers, meditation practioners, and friends who have said, "This music takes me where I want to be."

Season is a lush dream, beginning with its author beckoning the listener to join her on a journey of escape and "sing the season of the soul." There follow songs of lunar meditation, mythical goddesses, and bitersweet love. The style and tempo are full of ornate twists and turns, such as in the haunting "Echo," whose trippy drumbeats and melancholy vocals are backed by mournful strings and a lyrical piano, and in "Words," with its tribal sounding instrumentation. The contributions of David K Salih add another layer of spritual searching ("listen for the revolution / the galaxies within") as he urges us to hear "the consciousness in every molecule sing," and as the two vocals overlap we are greeted to a Pantheistic vision of "the essence of all that is and will always be." At other times Gail marries together the esoteric and the recognisable, lambasting the "demands" of calendars and clocks, and rejoicing in the pastoral naivety of "the silken caress of a soft summer breeze," and "the a mystic mountain, evergreen ... sanctuary."
As always Gail Warning has delivered a highly original work hard to compare, though if you like Leonard Cohen, Sade, Sigur Ros, Enya, the more atmospheric elements of Erasure, and music that is poetic and internationally flavoured, then you will adore Seasons of the Soul. This is a very beautiful record.
