Album Notes
With the release of two, brand new, powerful, all original songs “I’m through With You” and “Lovely Lady” on VINYL 45, former Epitome Of Sound lead singer EugeneThomas re-establishes himself as one of Northern Soul’s most treasured singer/songwriters and performers. These fresh new songs were written by Eugene and co-produced with WorldBeat, Safro-Rock producer/guitarist, Mthakathi (a.k.a Ema) at his Ikhaya Studios in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The songs will be released under the duo’s newly formed label Sweet Beet Records™
“This project started when Ema and I crossed paths professionally, earlier this year. We just hit it off as if we’d been friends for years. Not only did we find a shared creative passion for the music, but we discovered that we lived 5 minutes from each other in the same town, which is also the location of his recording studio! So it was kismet! Our goal with these two songs was to try to be as true and authentic as we could, not to any specific genre or style, but to our own soulful sensibilities…we think we got it!”
Solidly steeped in the American musical traditions of soul, gospel and R&B, Eugene has enjoyed a fruitful, decades spanning singing career starting in the early 60s when his group The Megatons scored a local New Jersey hit with “Detroit Sound.” But it was in 1968, after the group changed their name to Epitome of Sound and brought in veteran DooWop/Soul songwriter Robert Palladino, that Eugene enjoyed the successes of a major hit with the group’s song “You Don’t Love Me,” Through the years the song has remained a popular soul hit, garnering Eugene the recognition that allowed him to record and share the stage with many musical legends including Stevie Wonder, Wilson Pickett, Ben E. King, Shep and the Limelights, Curtis Mayfield, Felix Papalardi and The Young Rascals, and renowned songstress Phoebe Snow.
Eugene is currently planning his next recording project with Mthakathi (LOTS more songs to come!) and is also planning to take all of his fresh new material out for a spin with live performances in festivals and venues all over the world. Look for him in your town soon!
