ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I was originally going to record a "Return of the Killer Groove Band" album, include a couple outtakes from the original Killer Groove Band album and dedicate it to the late co-founder of the band, great bassist, Tim Drummond. Well, I'm still including those outtakes along with all the new recordings and I'm still dedicating the album to Tim, but the new songs are so diverse, I had to use a different title for the CD. Is it pop? Is it rock? Is it R&B? Is it blues or Americana? You tell me.
I’m just a singer/songwriter. I don’t tell my muse where to go. My muse leads me and I follow. I've had a pop hit, an R&B hit, and a dance hit on their respective charts so why limit myself now? Right? So here's some info about the songs:

Tracks 1."Life is Sacred" & 9."Brains With a Heart" were recorded & mixed at the Vibe in Ft. Myers, FL / Charlie Lukes: Engineer / Mac Daddyy: Production Assistant / August Zona: Guitar & Bass / Darrell Nutt: Drums / Essra: Piano & Vocals
There's a beautiful video of "Life is Sacred" on YouTube created by Charlie Lukes.

Track 2."Guns Make it Easy to Kill" was recorded in Nashville by Mike Lawson who also played guitar, with Travis Collinsworth on bass, Mark Pavlack on drums, Jay Vern on B3, Mark “Smiley” Shenkel on sax and Essra on piano & vocals / Mixed by Jay Vern
I wrote this song to express my feelings about our country's need for common sense gun control laws. How many more children must die due to the lack of such laws? Both this and "Life is Sacred" were released as digital singles here on CD Baby as sneak peeks of the coming album. On the new CD, of course, you can hear both songs in their full audio splendor!

Track 3. "Break Thru' the Clouds" was recorded in L.A., CA with Tim Drummond on bass, Dean Parks and Stevie Gurr on guitars, Marc Goodman on organ, Matt Betton on drums, Essra on piano & vocals / Featuring The Chambers Bros. on Background Vocals!

Track 4."To Feel His Love" was recorded at Hacienda Mohawk (my home studio) Steve Tolson: Engineer / Scott Achord: Bass & Background Vocals / Russ Wheeler (who is also a co-writer on the song): Piano & Background Vocals. This song was originally written for the gospel group, the Soulstirrers, but their project fell through and the song has finally landed on this album. It was way too good to be wasted! You'll agree when you listen. It'll send shivers down your spine!

Tracks 5."King of My Hill", 6."Unfinished Business", 7."Straight and Narrow", 10."Actions Speak Louder Than Words"
& 11."Rollin' With the Punches" were all recorded & Mixed at Jay Vern’s Place, Nashville / Sam Hunter: Bass & Guitar
Gabe Klein: Drums / Jay Vern: B3 / Essra: Piano (Acoustic Guitar on "Straight and Narrow", a duet with Stephen Frey)

Track 8. "Dad" was recorded at Reflections, Nashville with Tim Drummond on Bass, Robin Ruddy on Pedal Steel Guitar
and Essra on Piano & Vocals. This and "Break Thru' the Clouds" are the two older tracks with the late Tim Drummond on bass that we originally recorded for our "Essie Mae Hawk Meets the Killer Groove Band" CD (which, BTW, is also available here on CD Baby and an incredible collection of music created by me and Tim that I highly recommend.).

Track 12. "It's the Right Thing" Recorded, Mixed & Arranged by Johnny Neel: all Keyboards (Organ, Synth) /
Donnie Smith: Drums / Ricky Godfrey: Guitar / Dennis Gulley: Bass / This is another older recording I included, originally written for the Nicolas Cage movie, “Snake Eyes”. It came very close to being chosen to play through the credits.
Johnny Neel did such a beautiful job arranging and recording it, I felt it deserved to be heard and makes the perfect closer for this album. (Sadly, drummer, Donnie Smith has since passed away. Not just a great drummer, but the nicest guy you ever want to know.)

Some more points of interest about the songs:
I wrote "UNFINISHED BUSINESS" about me and Jackson Browne, our budding romance (we were 21) and why it never got to blossom. (although we've remained friends.)

One of the most requested songs at my shows, "ROLLIN’ WITH THE PUNCHES", took over 25 years to finally record! I'm told it's the song of the times, that everyone feels this way now, which is funny since I wrote it with Richard Feldman 27 years ago! The recording of it we made then didn't get much of a chance. Just as we were mixing the first pass, Richard's wife went into labor! I tried recording it several years later with Tim Drummond and Johnny Neel. We had a great groove going until the drummer (who I will not name) started playing with us and ruined the whole feel. Several years later I tried to include it in a blues album I was recording for Evidence Music, a small blues label, but the producer refused to record anything he wasn't a writer on. So finally, when I started recording this album, it was the first song we recorded! And we nailed it! The song for the times! When it comes to timing, the Universe knows what she's doing.

The One and Only Essra Mohawk - Lyrical poetry!
Recently bought The One and Only Essra Mohawk. Money well spent! Really loved the music and piano playing. Her words remind me of lyrical poetry. Essra's voice carries very well into each song. A former stint with the Mothers Of Invention is a nice addition to her resume. Life Is Sacred is a great opener on her cd. And the words to Guns Make It Easy To Kill could easily have been on a Crosby Stills Nash and Young album. Just one question: How soon does her next cd come out?! Thanks Essra! Congrats!

The One and Only Essra Mohawk
Because I cannot edit my review I want to add this important note. Where I mentioned the "soulful choir" on "Break On Thru' The Clouds" I mistook the backup vocals to be Essra, when it was actually the Chambers Brothers doing backups. How awesome is that and they certainly deserve credit for their beautiful work.

The One and Only Essra Mohawk
Accept no substitutes, this IS the One and Only Essra Mohawk This is a beautiful album and effortlessly crosses several genres. Always eloquent and pitch-perfect, Essra has released a manifesto of love as always.
The first two cuts, : Life Is Sacred and Guns Make it easy to kill belong right upfront. The songs are in touch with the violent world we now find ourselves living in and I hope to God people will listen and heed.
Breaking Thru' the Clouds, the first track with the mighty Tim Drummond on bass. A beautiful song with great production, ie: Leslie guitar, and majestic Hammond breaking through the mix. Essra's lovely voice and soulful choir are perfect.
To Feel His Love is such a good feeling song with a gospel feel and Essra's sweet voice makes me feel such comfort and reveals her big heart.
King of My Hill takes me to another comfy and happy place and expresses what one feels about true love for the light of their life.
Unfinished Business, Essra's song to Jackson Browne, a minor key lament to a love story that lacks the final chapter.
Straight and Narrow could have easily been a CSNY song with its beautiful harmonies and sparse instrumentation. and had CSNY recorded it, this would still be the best version. of it.
Dad is another with Tim Drummond on it and the universal feeling of a daughter's love for her Father is worded and sung so well it makes tears well up in my eyes. The steel guitar and structure gives a nice country feel.
Brains With A Heart "you're not lazy, you're not crazy, how amazing you are" has such a sweet sentiment in tying the brains with a heart connection. Esssra is such a powerful songwriter and performer, which is on full display..
I love the Bo Diddley guitar on Actions Speak Louder Than Words. Essra's sultry voice asks for the truth, as in "watch what he does, not what he says". This kind of fits the political scene and I won't go there with this because it could be repurposed to have many meanings.
Rollin' With the Punches describes a person stuck on a ship of fools where everybody's rocking the boat but she can take it and has the experience to roll with the punches.
It's The Right Thing is a soulful ballad with so much heart and humility. Beautiful chord structure and a perfect last song, although I always long for more. after her last cut on an album. The best solution for me is to repeat all the tracks.
When it's all said and done, this album is dripping with emotion and good feelings and above all; heart. I love it very much and thank you for this masterpiece Essra.
