by Endre Hegedüs

Several of my most beloved encores frequently given at the end of my concerts. This record, however, was born in a very unique environment: played on a Steinway B-type piano, recorded on analog reel-tape in our own livingroom.

Album Notes
Sometimes this question intrigues me - why does a musician take on the arduous task of making a recording, including securing the finances and enduring the monotony of recording the music which is, to be frank, quite different from the atmosphere of a live concert? My answer is that I am driven by an insatiable desire implanted in my heart by the Creator, giving me pleasure and pain at the same time, to pass on to as many people as possible the radiant joy I feel when I play and bring masterpieces to life.
This CD of mine is the 25th ("my silver disc recording"). The musical recording reaches a remarkably large number of listeners, some familiar with the music and some new to it. The amazing stories I hear of the afterlife of my recordings could soon make up a small book.

Circumstances would have it that this summer we had to find a new setting in which to record. Our own living room became the birth-place of this CD. This cosy room has been part of our everyday life for fourteen years, where our children have grown up, music has almost always been around and mutual love has provided the solid ground of our existence - quite different from the sterile environment of a recording studio.

The various noises of the outside world did not subside until late at night, so we recorded the piano pieces between eleven and three in the morning using the new Steinway Model B piano, generously lent by the Hungarian Steinway agency. In spite of the closed windows the chirping of the crickets penetrated into the room from the garden and is barely audible during each composition.

It was a revelation to me that the use of the „obsolete” Nagra reel-to-reel analogue tape recorder brought out the true sound of the piano notes. This system was made available by Vilmos Nagy, the owner of the Tape-Recorder Museum, a unique collection in Hungary. There is a joy and gratitude in my heart towards Vilmos Nagy and Kálmán Szentiványi, acted as members of the staff – we spent pleasant and unforgettable hours together in mutual understanding.

The CD has one more novelty – the embellishment of the sound by the use of „Tone Pearls”, bringing the compositions to life thus offering full musical enjoyment to me. So too will the listeners sense something unusual is happening. It is as if the music has been released from its material-bound existence and now sorrounds us in its original splendour as God almighty created it through the soul of composers. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks tom y friend László Gaál, inventor and creator of the „Tone Pearls” and manager of this recording.

I wish to extend special thanks to my friend István Madarassy, goldsmith and sculptor for the design of the CD cover. The programme of this „jubilee disc” comprises several gems of various lengths. I usually play them at the end of my concerts when a lot of enthusiastic, happy and flushed faces look up to me asking for more – hence the strange title Endre Hegedűs Encores. I played this music with a soul overflowing with joy – I ask all my music-loving friends tol isten this album in tha same spirit, with an open heart and ready ears.
