Album Notes
Elixir is a high energy dance band that combines driving fiddle and guitar playing, and the rich texture and rhythmic excitement of a full horn section. Elixir performs tightly crafted music drawing on a wide range of styles and evoking a variety of moods. Elegant melodies evolve into raucous dixieland horn riffs; transcendent harmonies, playful improvisations, and rock, swing and reggae-inspired rhythms weave in and out of traditional and original Irish, French Canadian and New England tunes.

Elixir is:
Nils Fredland, trombone / vocals
Ethan Hazzard-Watkins, fiddle / vocals
Jesse Hazzard-Watkins, trumpet / vocals
Anna Patton, clarinet / vocals
Owen Morrison, guitar / foot percussion

On the band's debut CD, Elixir has distilled it's powerful dance groove into a highly listenable format. Combining the raw energy of a honkin' horn section with some slick fiddling and absolutely awesome guitar licks, they've brewed a musical tincture they call Super Tonic. You'll hear some favorite dance tunes, a couple of waltzes, a tango, and a few other surprises. The band is joined by Will Patton on bass and mandolin, and Deb Patton on vocals and shaker.

Steve Ramm "Anything Phonographic"

Hard to categorize but I LOVE this CD!
Every day since I received this CD a few weeks ago I’ve made time to play at least part of it! And it makes my day go that much nicer!

Somewhere in this five-member band from Vermont there’s a contra dance band, but it’s really hidden. That’s fine with me because many contra dance bands sound alike. Elixir is like no other! Why? Well, there is the fiddle and the guitar and (a bass when their friend Will Patton joins them). But there is also the trumpet, clarinet and trombone. (What? A brass section in a contra dance band? Yep, I told you they were different.)

With two wonderful pop standards from the 1920s (“Dance Around In Your Bones” and “I Don’t Know Why (I Love You Like I Do”)) performed with vocals, there’s a tip to Tin Pan Alley. “Bird In The Bush” and “Abe’s Retreat” are jigs (but with a difference). The clarinet on “Montreal” even gives this song a Klezmer feel.

My favorite tracks are those with the brass section intro or back beat. Listen to a sample of “Bird In The Bush” or the tango influences of “Dongo”. Are you hooked yet?

Infectious, lively music that ill help get you through the day, and maybe on your feet!
