When It Rains album ...
El Colonel : When It Rain
(Blue Dawg)
Enlisting his own personal army of veteran northwest musicians and technicians El Colonel has completed his decade long quest for perfection for his long awaited album When it Rains, released August of 2014. The twelve song collection is surprisingly un guitar centric for a player who has a reputation a smoking gunslinger, instead Stromberg ...aka El Colonel features tasty horns and souring vocals throughout showing off the talents of guests Bruce guy, Scotty Harris, Ron Hendee, vocalist Suze Sims and Ron Weinstein on B3. Two of the best bass players around Polly O’ Keary and Howard Hooper join journey man drummer Les Merrihew in the stellar rhythm section. The opening track, ‘Into The Twilight,’ kicks off with SRV styled guitar riff then slides into a flirtatious groove with El Colonel channeling a bit of Prince and his purple badness. The title track then brings in the horns to prop up the melancholy swing before the full blown melodrama of ‘I’m Leavin Ya Baby,’ with its’ expectant slow blues cadence and glorious gospel harmonies from Suze Sims. Thankfully the mood lightens on the back shuffle ‘She’s So Sweet,’ with the Colonel showing off his vocal range and some randy baritone sax from Scotty Harris. The clever reinvention of ‘I Feel So Bad,’ into a New Orleans styled carnival ride is a fine album intermission. The second half of the album then sees El Colonel hitting all the blue scorner stones beginning with the eight minute twelve bar opus ‘I' ve Been Used,’ followed by the slide guitar high jinks ‘Bo Dat Train.’ More super sax is featured during the slinky ‘Don’t Make Me Suffer,’ before the guitar really takes off on the jumpin ‘I Feel Blue.’ The set closes with a quick bit of old timey acoustic ‘El Colonel Blues,’ as a night cap.
