ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Cosmopolitan Soul is an exploration of the diversity of the blues, a musical form that comes from a particular place but resists being constrained by that place. It draws on the music of the Mississippi delta that transformed as it migrated north to Chicago, across the USA and from there to Britain and across the world. Most of the songs on this record started life as a twelve-bar blues progression that morphed into folk-blues, country-blues, rocking-blues, funk, jazz, Latin and African rhythms. Lyrically, the album is an exploration of cosmopolitanism, playing with ideas of planetary connectedness and hybridity alongside the human values of freedom and justice. The Blues Professors - Ben 'Doc' Bowling (guitar and lead vocals), Donnie Burke (lead guitar), Simon Minney (bass), Roger Chapman (drums) - are joined on this album by a host of musicians playing violin, saxophone, trumpet, banjo, slide guitar, piano and percussion.
