ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Life in the High Desert of California has a way of settling the mind and sharpening one's resolve. Ceaselessly, everything that stands, no matter if made by humans or created by the consequences of nature, is slowly being disintegrated by tons of sand, carried by the wind. The desert might seem still, but actually it's in a state of perpetual motion. It's not tranquil. It's hectic. Those who live there are constantly reminded of the transitory state of their existence. The desert is forever. You're just visiting. The less you have, the less you'll lose. There's a beauty and unalterable certainty to that which a few find appealing. Some of them make music.

Derwood Andrews, he of Generation X, Empire, Westworld and Moondogg to name a few bands, has been living on Yucca Mesa for almost two decades. From the early days of Punk, Derwood emerged as one of the best guitar players and songwriters from a genre that called out Rock and Roll and saved it from boring itself to death.

For many years, Derwood has been making strikingly beautiful music forged by heat and wide open space, bereft of big city distraction and commercial concern. That is to say, it's the real thing, which you always know when you hear it. In a series called Tone Poet, Derwood has released four volumes. Music this devoid of impurities deserves some vinyl to carve itself into.

The Tone Poet Smash Hits LP takes from these volumes. Breaking from the usual solo model, Smash Hits has two collaborators. Fellow desert dweller, Sean Wheeler contributes vocals on All In The Name, and I Love Your Mess along with Jump Wagon Blues finds the one and only Rat Scabies on drums.

You might be surprised that someone who so brilliantly electrified the Rock music landscape would find himself seated on the sun's anvil, a guitar in his lap, leaning into a microphone to sing, but this is where the desert, time and Derwood's great talent have taken him.

This is a unique record that you might not have seen coming but will be glad it arrived.

--Henry Rollins
