ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Darrell B. Cobb began writing novels in 1991. Before he realized how much time he’d invested in this pursuit, he had finished nearly ten books. He won a few local writing contests and found a few publishing outlets (mostly for book reviews, op-eds, short first-person stories and the like) but the big prize – formal publication of his own books – eluded him. In 2005, frustrated by the impenetrable walls surrounding the publishing industry, Cobb returned to his first love, music composition. Looking for inspiration, Cobb discovered source material within his own completed work. Editors had already told him that his novels resembled screenplays, and Cobb would be the first to acknowledge that his writing style was, for want of a better word, cinematic. Beginning with his 2006 novel, A.D., Cobb began writing music that would serve as literary wallpaper. One year later, Cobb had completed 150 minutes of highly-stylized music that was tailored to the novel’s beating heart, individual scenes, characters and emotions. In other words, Cobb had written a soundtrack to his own book. Edited down to a little over 65 minutes, Music From A. D. has been reassembled into a stand-alone listening experience that does not require familiarity with the book source. Armed with nothing more than a PC and some writing software (and a compositional degree from California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles), Cobb also found his real life muse. Her name is Joy Lisa, a former wildlife specialist now working as a visual artist. The two married in 2002, and, together, they’re now engaged in a complex plan to bring attention to Darrell’s books as well as Joy Lisa’s colorful abstracts. Music From A. D. could be classified as modern-ancient; Westernized Middle-Eastern; pop-classical; formless ambient narrative – and everything in between.
